Bears also picked up Trent Taylor PR/WR, and Quindell Johnson, S.

So my assumption is, Jenkins to IR, and AJ Thomas waived for hopeful move to PS.

Grabbed an Edge, PR/WR, and S, after trading for Feeney (OL).

Those and LB/CB were the main places that could be upgraded. Curious to see what they do with the WR room with 7 now in there. Very limited utility for a WR6 that doesn't play special teams.

That was quick:

Khalid Kareem, Edge from the Colts. Is he better than Lewis or Gipson?

Uhm…this is a head scratcher to me.  Looks like he was a decent player in college where he played for Notre Dame.  But since coming into the league in 2020 he has 29 total tackles (including combined tackles) and 1 sack.  If all the highlight film you can find of him is from his college days, almost four years ago, that’s concerning.

Flus knows him.  All I can guess is that this means Lewis wasn’t really a HITS guy and the new guy is.  We all know this far down the roster how important special teams is.

Should at least be a  better run defender than Lewis.  Next off-season is going to be all about pass rusher.

It is a good sign that the Bears are cutting players that have looked good. Last year, all those guys were playing, some starting. So if we are having discussions about DE5 and S4 and WR6, the roster is in good shape.

Apparently they liked Kareem over Lewis and Gipson (no one claimed Gipson), and Johnson at Safety over AJ Thomas.

Once Taylor arrives, they can either put Jenkins on IR, or cut either Velus or ESB. After that, the roster is pretty much a lock outside of other injuries.

Jenkins to IR as expected, opening a space for Taylor to come in as the PR/WR.

So if there are any other moves, it would more than likely be cutting ESB or Velus for a TE or LB, or upgrading at CB6 (Jaylon Jones). Other than that, the roster is really solid from top to bottom.

Kareem is more complete at DE in their eyes.  Lewis and Gibson would be a pass rush specialist.  That tells me come draft, look for bigger DEs that play the run well and set the edge.  The sacks will come with greater inside pressure.

As for Velus, the Bears are giving him this season to make or break.  Ego might be in play and that is fine.  They see something in his ability and we have seen a few glimpses even though his Punt Return ability lacks.

I like Poles quote about Trent Taylor:  “Consistency,” Poles said. “When the ball gets punted you can go grab a snack and go to the bathroom and come back and you feel confident about it.”

After 2 cracks at finding explosive PRs in Velus and Scott, we just went the Bill Belichick route.

Jenkins and Kramer to the IR as I expected.

Peterman gets added to the 53-man. So down to 8 OL now (Patrick, Carter, and Borom are backups).

Nice.  That leaves Bagent as #2.   Poles was pretty clear that he wanted at least one veteran voice in that room and Peterman seemed to be the preference.

They may be trying to find a trade partner for V Jones and will bring someone back. l like that Poles doesnt stay loyal to his picks if has someone better to play .I think  they may put Feeny at OC and leave Whitehair at LG

I wouldn't be upset if they traded Velus but he is an outstanding KR and he's really good on the jet sweeps and other quick hitting plays.  For the KRs this year with the new rules I don't have a clue how that plays out.  A returner like Velus is good enough that teams might stay away from trying the short kicks.  Or maybe they try it more often?

Plus he is good enough as a WR down the field for a defense to worry about (better than CPatterson ever was).  We have good top 3 WRs, good TE combination, plus good RBs.  All players a D has to respect.  I'd like to see what Velus can do working around all that.   If teams start to double DJ Moore that opens a gap in coverage.

Late in a game after DBs have been beat on by Foreman and Johnson for 3 quarters legs are tired.  Then make them go keep up with Velus.

If they traded him we could just as easily use Scott on the same plays but his hands might be worse than Velus' and he's not as big and strong in traffic.   It's like Velus last year....I don't trust Scott at all yet.

Poles had a little bit of Pace-itis with the Velus pick (smartest guy in the room syndrome).

However, the next 2 WRs after Velus have not done much either.
Jalen Tolbert - 2-12, 0 TD
David Bell - 24-214, 0 TD, KR 1-12

Compare to Velus: Receiving: 7-107, 1 TD, Rushing: 9-103 yds, 1 TD, PR 5-35yds, KR 22-607yds

So all-purpose yard-wise, Velus had 852 yds last year in 12 games.

Considering all those yards, Velus has the 4th most all-purpose yards out of all the 2021 WRs, but was the 14th WR selected. He also had the same number of TDs as Alec Pierce, and one more than Burks.

1. Wilson - 1107 yds
2. Olave - 1042 yds
3. London - 866 yds
4. Jones - 852 yds, 2 TD
5. Pickens - 825 yds
6. Watson - 726 yds
7. Pierce - 593 yds, 2 TD
8. Dotson - 516 yds
9. Burks - 491 yds, 1 TD
10. Doubs - 475 yds

I think Poles wants to draft best player available in general. I also think that last year he needed to evaluate Fields, and that meant getting some speed at WR in a place in the draft where that good player wasnt available.

So I dont think it was a matter of smartest guy in the room syndrome as much as being in a tight spot and having a glaring need. Having a need like that going into the draft means youre likely gonna have to reach, and he did.

I think as time goes forward, you will see fewer of these kind of picks in the first 4 rounds from Poles.

Jones was a high 3rd round pick. I don't recall seeing any projections of him earlier than the 4th, mainly a 4th to 5th round projection, so going early in the 3rd seemed like a reach. The age was always going to be a factor as well. It felt Shaheen-like at the time. If all he ends up is a kick returner, I doubt he gets a 2nd contract from the Bears.
