Grossman willing to return next year

Rex has continued the 08 season talk now surrounding the Bears with this statement.

"I'd like to be back here if I'm wanted back here," said Grossman, who endured heavy criticism last season despite helping the Bears make the Super Bowl. "We'll see what goes on."

The Bears are 5-8 and out of the playoff picture. Grossman, a first-round pick in 2003, said he wants to be somewhere where he can compete for the starting job.

"I think you're always proving yourself, and I definitely would like to be in a situation anywhere where I'm competing for the starting job and show what I can do, and just kind of improve and take the experience that I've had throughout the last couple years and build upon that," he said.

"I know I can play good football, so if I'm in a position where I can compete next July, I'll be happy."

Well, he'd certainly have the chance to compete for a starting job in Chicago. The question is, would he be happy to do so on a 1 or 2 year deal?

The question is do Jerry Angelo and company feel the same way? I know that I think by far and away the best option is for Orton to look good in his next couple of starts with the Bears signing Grossman to an incentive laden deal all while they draft a relatively raw QB. You let Kyle/Rex battle it out (I think Rex would win and he's perfectly capable of being a winning NFL QB) and this allows the club to spend its cap room on a FA lineman from the Steelers (big money) as well as allow the squad to draft a tackle in the first round (Offensive Tackle) which should at least give you two new starters on the line (I still think they should dump everyone but Kreutz/Tait).

Than you go after a veteran safety and draft a safety somewhere in the first two days and hopefully have the money to resign Briggs (also hope that your dlineman get healthy). Move Alex Brown back to the starting role and let Anderson be the 3rd down specialist (something the team should have done long ago).

I hope they sign him, i like what i saw when he came back after his benching. If i was Rex i would sign here again only if the Bears shore up the O Line. If the Oline is not fixed then Rex is dead in the water along with Benson.

I think the bigger question is whether the Bears believe they need to really upgrade the running back position or if they feel that upgrading the offensive line can do enough to at least make the running game serviceable (obviously if they have the ability to bring in a very good RB they will do it, but I think the offensive line has to take priority with either a RB/WR being taken in the 2nd round).

I'm going to join in the group of people saying that the Bears have no need to spend a draft pick on a RB this offseason. If nothing else, I think almost everyone here can say that the play of the Bears O-Line was uniformly bad this year, and I've seen enough poor running backs look good behind a good O-Line to say that there's no reason to blow more cap space on another RB. On top of that, over and over again we see teams finding a RB off the scrap heap, undrafted, or late rounder guys, and when you stick them behind a solid O-Line and give them a decent passing attack they go crazy.

IMO, if the Bears see a QB they really like in round 1, I'd be willing to accept that. But this is supposed to be a deep year for O-Linemen. Keep Tait as your core, take whichever LT remaining when you draft sits at the top of your board unless somehow all the potential first round guys vanish befor ethe Bears pick, and give some strong consideration to spending the cap room on a guy like Faneca, to give you some veteran peaking muscle on that same side at the guard position.

Give both the QB and the RB a solid O-Line and see what happens.

When they Drafted Benson i was not very happy with this pick(i am not a big fan of bruising type backs, i love having speed in the Backfield). Let me say this also that i was not a fan of TJ. Watching the Bears this year left me wondering if Benson could be great. There were some plays that he looked very good. The plays were there was a hole to run in he would pick up some good yardage. Take the Seahawk game he came out on fire and then we sit him. I wish we could have seen him play more in the 2nd quarter. The big problem with Benson is that if there was no hole there was no gain, he does not have the speed or quickness to make something out of nothing. Plus you cant forget the many plays were Benson was getting hit right as the ball was being handed off. I agree with you that Tait and Kreutz should stay and upgrade the rest. Garza might be OK. If the Oline is overhauled i think Benson could be a good downfield runner, which would help out any QB we have in there. I am also a Rex believer, he has shown that he can make the throws that most QBS dream about. I dont think good old 12 or 18 could do much with our offense. Perfect example is Green Bay, the last two years Farve looked horrible due to no run game and a crap oline that gave him no time to throw, this year they give him time to throw and they look great.

The need for WR and OL is so much greater that we cant really afford to address QB or RB in the draft unless its on day 2.

OL should be the number 1 priority. I really don't like Rex at all, and wouldn't mind him to leave. Orton and Griese can hold down the fort IMHO. But if the choice is Rex or a round 1 QB, I would much rather have Rex and get a stud OT in round 1. There should be at least 3 maybe as many as 5 good OT's go in round 1 and we should get 1 of them. Then we need 2 or 3 more OL prospects in the later rounds to develop. This team will go nowhere without good young blood on the OL.

There are a couple options we have...

1. If Orton rocks, screw Grossman

2. If we draft a guy first day (but not first round), like Joe Flacco (me heart Flacco), then I think Griese is the guy to keep along with Orton due to Griese being a veteran and being able to teach the young QB more.

3. If we don't draft a guy first day, which would be most likely stupid, then yeah, bring back Grossman on the cheap.

The one thing that has impressed me about Griese is how he has been a mentor to Orton. Some QB's would refuse to help a young guy, but Griese has not been like that. That alone makes me think he should stay, especially if we draft a QB. I think Orton will be a good/very good QB and that he will be our starter for years to come. But if I am wrong, keeping Griese and drafting a QB is the way to go. The next 3 games will tell us if Orton will be our starter next year (I think he will be) and that will tell us our plans going forward.
