Bears interviewing Klint Kubiak for OC Position

They may be looking to fix Justin, and they may be looking to ease fears of a rookie (Williams) coming into the situation, since we kept Eberflus. The same guy (whoever that is) probably fits both bills. In keeping the OL coach, the incoming guy will almost certainly be a passing specialist.

I hate that Williams has made noises like he might choose not to play for a team that drafts him, and all the other silliness. If he isn't a Bear, I am really going to enjoy hating him for his career. I will like him less than Rodgers. If he is a Bear, and plays well for us, I will love him like and elderly rich wife I married for her money LOL

I think a lot of that is noise. NE is not gonna be the same with Bill. Jerod Mayo is cool, but he is not Belichick. WAS doesn't even have a HC yet, so that is up in the air. They also traded away their starting Edge rushers. 

I feel like his height is gonna be the shocker at the Combine. He will come in at 6'0.5" or something like that, under 6'1", and that is going to start a shitstorm. 

If the Bears pass on him, but get a king's ransom again, this team might be able to play without a QB, just run 10 players out there and they would still win.

I havent done my homework yet, but right now, Im out on Caleb. I agree he is short, and his mystique is not gonna last through the combine - I bet he will only throw at his own pro day etc. His ego is too big, and i cant wait to see him get hammered in the NFL. Where Justin is easy to root for personally, Caleb is not.

But all that aside, who is the gem QB in this years draft? Is there one? Can they be identified? I thought it might be Penix, but after the National Championship game, Im looking at Daniels. And I have never given Maye a fair shake at all.

The one thing that has hit me about Williams is, for some reason, he gives me a Claypool vibe. Like once he gets hit in the mouth and teabagged, he is gonna turtle. 

Daniels is probably the most intriguing and seems to hit all the standard checkboxes you are looking for in a QB. Maye scares me because I see that NC uniform and it gives me nightmares. He actually reminds me of Rivers though, just with normal throwing motion.

I'd like to see Kubiak get it. Get in early on our version of Shannahan. Then the Flus can go steal the best coach he knows from Indianapolis as D coordinator, and maintain play calling.

For all his issues, Justin Fields has never given less than all he has, and never had crap like this.

And speaking of, how about Jameis Winston making a unilateral decision to score against the Falcons on what was called by the coach to be a kneel down? I think with NIL and egos running wild we will see more of this lack of discipline in some of the players in the draft. I can see there being bad boy teams like the Raiders once were, and teams that have more discipline. It will be interesting to watch them compete too. Sometimes that attitude comes from being really good, and we all remember a certain punky QB that won us a Superbowl. There will be bad boy heroes and villains.

But Justin has never been like that, and I would prefer smart, disciplined excellent QBs in the future to a headcase every time.

I'd phrase it differently but yeah:   Do you know when to call/utilize quick slants?   Against which type of defenses and what situations?  What are your counter plays to the quick slants and when/why would you call those plays?  

I don't really care about B2B plays if they are effective.  I know that's not practical in most situations but for all I care we can run off-tackle for 8 yds a pop all game long if they can't stop it.  Last year, or maybe a couple years back, the Packers just ran screen after screen against our D and we couldn't stop it.  Just don't go assuming the next opponent has the same weakness or that it's your strength against everyone.  Would you call the same play if you weren't gaining any yards?  Would you call those WR screens and put your 175lb rookie receiver as the primary blocker?  This is where on-the-field talent has to match up with game plan/scheme.    Bad memories.

All prospects will be under constant probing. Poles likes athletic types with strong intangibles. Not sure who fills that bill but if one does Poles will find him. Maye or Daniels? If one doesn't slap him in the face, Justin will be back.

I like both candidates they started with. Kubiak is really intriguing…if nothing else on name alone…plus I love the shanny system/tree.

Just like Shanahan, Kubiak has had a lot of football in his life. The year he was OC for MIN in 2021, their offense was 13th in DVOA, 12th in EPA/Droback, Cousins had a 103.1 QB Rating (4th), 33 TD (9th), 7 INT (2nd), and 4,221 yards passing (9th). Some may say that is what Cousins always does, but the year prior he threw 13 picks and the year after 14 picks, which are double the INTs from the Kubiak year, which is notable. The QB Rating dropped to 92.5 last year, a 10+ pt drop is also notable.

That is an interesting comparison to what Geno did last year with Waldron:

100.9 QB Rating (5th), 30 TD (4th), 11 INT, 4,282 yards passing (8th).

 

If I had to lean one way or the other Waldron would be my pick. Getsy was on Rodgers coattails, Kubiak could've easily been on Cousins. Also note, Kubiak didn't get another OC job in the last two years. The alternative argument is he has gained a year under Shanahan to make his scheme even better.

Two years ago nobody with experience wanted these jobs (OC/DC).  Flus had trouble finding his DC for sure and eventually settled on Williams but he was clearly never his first choice.  This time around we have the phone ringing with people calling to be on the list and we start out of the gate with two of the top candidates on our wish list (not necessarily the same as Poles/Flus list).

We had to settle, due the shit show that Pace left us.  Knowing that Poles was going to blow it all didn't instill longevity in anyone's mind.  So, b to all that signed up two years ago so, I admire the balls and vision.  Now we are a place everyone wants to be, due to the rebuild and culture.  Coaches and Vets that want to win will start migrating here.
