95 Adams, Anthony* NT - Meh. I could care less. I am sure a good fourth rounder could replace him

97 Anderson, Mark* DE - Stays. The only real sack threat the Bears have on every play

20 Archuleta, Adam SS - Meh. If it doesn't hurt the cap too much, he might have to leave

94 Ayanbadejo, Brendon LB - Stays. Best ST player in the NFL, LB depth

73 Bazuin, Dan* DE - Stays. Young, contract, potential

67 Beekman, Josh G - Meh

32 Benson, Cedric* RB - Stays. Contract purposes alone makes him a keeper

80 Berrian, Bernard WR - Stays. The only WR on the Bears that could be considered a #1

16 Bradley, Mark WR - Stays. How in the hell is he not on the field! If he leaves, he'll end up doing very well on another team

55 Briggs, Lance OLB - Leaves. He will want too much money. He'll be greedy and go FA. Of course, like Rosey Colvin, the NFL will find out he's good, but not as good as once thought.

96 Brown, Alex DE - Stays. Not playing poorly, but sufficiently to stay

30 Brown, Mike* - Stays. The potential is just too enticing. If he plays, he is the veteran Bob Sanders. He is better than Sanders, IMHO. Game changer

74 Brown, Ruben* - See ya!! It'd be better to put in a blocking dummy

88 Clark, Desmond TE - Stays. Still a productive, good TE. Should be subordinate to Olsen though

81 Davis, Rashied WR - Stays. I like him, and think he has done well when given the chance

98 Dvoracek, Dusty* DT - Stays. Shows huge potential, if ever on the field

90 Garay, Antonio* DE - Stays. Depth purposes and minor rotation only

63 Garza, Roberto G - Stays. Still has life in the legs

43 Gattis, Josh SAF - Meh

85 Gilmore, John TE - Meh. With Clark and Olsen, Gilmore should never see the field

9 Gould, Robbie K - Stays. One of the top five FG kickers in the NFL

21 Graham, Corey CB - Stays. Need depth

14 Griese, Brian QB - GTFO. Either you are a stable, veteran QB, or you are an older Rex Grossman. We have a young Rex Grossman, an old one is not needed.

8 Grossman, Rex QB - Stays. Still probably the best QB on the Bears

91 Harris, Tommie DT - Stays. One of the best DL in the NFL

83 Hass, Mike WR - Meh. I'd like to see him since I hear so much, but at this point I just don't know

23 Hester, Devin WR - Stays. Most dangerous player in the NFL?

92 Hillenmeyer, Hunter OLB - Stays. With Briggs leaving, stability is needed

71 Idonije, Israel DE - Stays. Most versatile Bears' DLineman

35 Jimoh, Ade* DB - Meh

72 Kennedy, Jimmy DT - Stays. Showed enough in limited time to be brought back

57 Kreutz, Olin C - Stays. Best OL on the Bears, needs to work on long snap

65 Mannelly, Patrick LS - Best LS in the game!

38 Manning, Danieal FS - Stays. If he weren't young and inexperienced, he'd probably leave, but for now he still has potential

24 Manning, Ricky DB - GTFO. This guy is one of the worst players on the Bears

4 Maynard, Brad P - Stays. Still one of the best in the game

26 McBride, Trumaine CB - Stays. Has shown GREAT potential

58 McClover, Darrell LB - Meh

36 McGowan, Brandon SS - Stays. Better than either Manning

37 McKie, Jason FB - Stays, been a quiet leader this season

60 Metcalf, Terrence G - Meh. Hopefully he'll play better

69 Miller, Fred T - Byebye! This guy has sucked this year

87 Muhammad, Muhsin WR - Byebye! Doesn't get open or create enough separation to be a starting WR

68 Oakley, Anthony G - Meh

93 Ogunleye, Adewale DE - Stays, still playing well

53 Okwo, Michael* LB - Stays, LB depth

82 Olsen, Greg TE - Stays. Obvious

18 Orton, Kyle QB - Stays, and should compete for starting job

70 Oshinowo, Baba DT - Meh

44 Payne, Kevin* FS - Stays. Bears need to see EVERYONE at Safety

29 Peterson, Adrian RB - Stays. The Bears owe it to him in the least

39 Polite, Lousaka RB - Goes.

53 Roach, Nick LB - Meh.

Runnels, J.D.* RB - Stays. We still don't know what this kid can do

78 St. Clair, John T - Stays. Not good, not bad, just depth

76 Tait, John T - Stays. Should move to RT

33 Tillman, Charles CB - Stays. Good lockdown corner

75 Toeaina, Matt DT - Stays. Showed good potential

54 Urlacher, Brian MLB - Stays. Best MLB in the game

31 Vasher, Nathan CB - Stays. The Interceptor is still top notch when healthy

99 Walker, Darwin NT - Stays. Good backup

52 Williams, Jamar LB - Stays. Replacement for Briggs

59 Wilson, Rod LB - Stays. Briggs leaves, need depth

25 Wolfe, Garrett RB - Stays. Young, under contract, fast, big play potential as Westbrook-type RB

* Player on Injured Reserve

"95 Adams, Anthony* NT - Meh. I could care less. I am sure a good fourth rounder could replace him"

Disagree. He played very well this yr and provided good depth.

"20 Archuleta, Adam SS - Meh. If it doesn't hurt the cap too much, he might have to leave"

Disagree. Get him the hell out of here. He is being payed to play safety and cannot.

"60 Metcalf, Terrence G - Meh. Hopefully he'll play better"

Disagree. Has shown nothing in six years. Get him out of here.

"99 Walker, Darwin NT - Stays. Good backup"

Not unless he is willing to completely renogiate his contract since he is do a 5.2 million dollar roster bonus in March. You don't pay that type of money to a backup.

Otherwise, I basically agree. You may have to keep Griese if you cannot sign Grossman (who knows with the crappy QB play what the market will be.

Peace

I have difficulty doing this as prescribed because it just doesn't work that way. If they are under contract and don't have a huge roster bonus coming up, then I would target their position to provide competition in TC. That way we can see if the guy brought in is actually better before having to make a decision.

Guys with Bonuses coming up

Walker - I think his 5.5 mil roster bonus needs to be addressed. I think we could easily make that a bit more cap friendly. If he balks, let him go. He's been tough to evaluate with all his dings.

Moose - His roster bonus is only a couple million and I'm not exactly sure what to do about the position. I think Bradley has been out of the mix because they have been spending their precious little instructional time during the season on getting Hester more involved. Because of that, our 4th and 5th receivers haven't been productive at all and have provided little competition with the top 3. Rashied Davis is a free agent too, so I'd have to say keep Moose because without him we could end up losing our top 3 receivers otherwise. I'm too firm a believer in continuity to deem that acceptable in any circumstances.

Free Agents

Berrian - Keep him if we can reasonably

Rashied Davis - *See Berrian

Reuben Brown - Bring him back if healthy

Ayanbadejo - Sign him to a reasonable deal

Briggs - Buh bye - too much green for this scheme

Grossman - Bring him back to a reasonable 3 yr incentive filled contract

Gilmore - Give him a contract that won't hurt us if he gets beat out in camp

Guys to can no matter what

Archuleta - He just doesn't have the skills any more

Fred Miller - *see Archuleta

Everyone else

Bring everyone else back and let them compete for jobs. I'd try to provide more competition on the Oline, at safety, WR, and FB. The Dline should have plenty of folks to compete once everyone is healthy.

No contract is gauranteed so concievably anyone could be cut, but It isnt reality, so go ahead and do it however you want to do it.

I'll do the Offensive Starters first:

QB - Grossman - Sign to an incentive-laden contract. He would be the fall back option if nothing else happens.

RB - Benson - Stays, started to show some signs before injury, even with brutal O-Line.

FB - McKie - Stays, solid play for the price

OL - Miller & Brown - GONE, Metcalf - needs to compete for job

WR - Moose - GONE, try to trade, if not, cut after June 1st; Berrian - keep if the money is right, otherwise look for a comparable FA acquisition

TE - Clark - Keep, Only makes a $1mil in 2008, and is last year of his contract. Olsen needs to start though.

So for offensive starters, get rid of Miller, Brown, and Moose.

94 Ayanbadejo, Brendon LB

73 Bazuin, Dan* DE

67 Beekman, Josh G

32 Benson, Cedric* RB

80 Berrian, Bernard WR--failed several times to show he deserved to play. Many drops and missed blocks, plus FA has some good WRs. Also, training camp sensation Brandon Rideau is back with the team.

16 Bradley, Mark WR

55 Briggs, Lance OLB--see ya Mr. Lamborghini. Leave your last paycheck with the receptionist. She'll make sure your fatherless children are cared for.

96 Brown, Alex DE --I'd let him start and Anderson should sit.

30 Brown, Mike*

74 Brown, Ruben* age, injuries, and poor play

88 Clark, Desmond TE

81 Davis, Rashied WR

98 Dvoracek, Dusty* DT

90 Garay, Antonio* DE

63 Garza, Roberto G

43 Gattis, Josh SAF

85 Gilmore, John TE--Fontel Mines was a training camp sensation and has one year under his belt. Maybe his blocking has improved.

9 Gould, Robbie K

21 Graham, Corey CB

14 Griese, Brian QB--cut to save against the cap

8 Grossman, Rex QB --as already noted, an incentive laden-deal only.

91 Harris, Tommie DT

83 Hass, Mike WR--it's not his fault the coaching staff is too stupid to play a guy who catches everything thrown to him.

23 Hester, Devin WR

92 Hillenmeyer, Hunter OLB

71 Idonije, Israel DE

35 Jimoh, Ade* DB

72 Kennedy, Jimmy DT

57 Kreutz, Olin C

78 St. Clair, John T

76 Tait, John T

33 Tillman, Charles CB

75 Toeaina, Matt DT

54 Urlacher, Brian MLB

31 Vasher, Nathan CB

99 Walker, Darwin NT--cap casualty

52 Williams, Jamar LB

59 Wilson, Rod LB

25 Wolfe, Garrett RB

The keepers have their names in bold. The ones to not return are in regular print, I've made some notes behind some of these guys names about why I'd cut or keep them.

I just picked the guys who need to leave. Everyone else is a keeper/need.

Archuletta - Dead horse being kicked...never understood why they signed him in the first place.

Bradley/Davis - Either get them on the field or get rid of them...Bears traditionally hold on to WR "projects" for 3-4 years too long. If they are ever going to start, give them a chance soon.

M. Brown - The best when he's playing...heartbreaking season ending injury every year. I hope he comes back healthy and plays great again. Just tired of Bears not having a reasonable back-up plan.

Walker - Just depth, and they have/can find young talent cheaper.

St Clair - Shouldn't even be a backup.

Polite - Who??? What does this guy do? Too much clutter at this position to hold on to someone nobody is excited about.

Miller - Time is up. Do what we did a couple of years ago and get a quality Free Agent.

Grossman/Griese - Not the answer. Not now, not ever. Too much bad feeling from the fans, so get someone serviceable to play next year or 2 and draft a stud this year. Not like there's a complicated offense to learn, someone should be able to hit Berrian on a fly pattern and not throw 3 picks a game.

97 Anderson, Mark* DE Keep= young, cheap+ upside

20 Archuleta, Adam SS Dump= unproductive, expensive

94 Ayanbadejo, Brendon LB Keep= Total stud on special teams

73 Bazuin, Dan* DE Keep = young, cheap +upside

67 Beekman, Josh G Keep = young, cheap, project

32 Benson, Cedric* RB Keep = no other alternative

80 Berrian, Bernard WR Keep = if he were not on the field, they’d put 10 in the box.

16 Bradley, Mark WR Keep = Has talent, mystery why he doesn’t play more.

55 Briggs, Lance OLB Keep= If you can$$$

96 Brown, Alex DE Keep= cheap and better than Anderson

30 Brown, Mike* Keep = The D is always better. Play him at a reduced role if needed.

74 Brown, Ruben* Keep = When healthy, still good.

88 Clark, Desmond TE Keep = run that two TE set to death

81 Davis, Rashied WR Keep = But at a team friendly price

98 Dvoracek, Dusty* DT Keep = future stud

90 Garay, Antonio* DE Dump

57 Kreutz, Olin C Keep = start thinking of the future though

65 Mannelly, Patrick LS Best snapper in the league, but at the cost of a roster spot. Why can’t Olin, Garza or Beekman do this? They are all centers. If they can perform this function, let him go, we need the roster spot for new OL. Otherwise, he’s too valuable. Keep

38 Manning, Danieal FS Keep = one more year to develop and it’s turk time.

24 Manning, Ricky DB Dump

29 Peterson, Adrian RB Keep = until we get more talent, then cut him

39 Polite, Lousaka RB who??

53 Roach, Nick LB who???

Runnels, J.D.* RB Keep= to compete with McKie

78 St. Clair, John T Keep = valuable backup

76 Tait, John T Keep = move to RT

33 Tillman, Charles CB Keep = stud

75 Toeaina, Matt DT Keep

54 Urlacher, Brian MLB Keep = stud

31 Vasher, Nathan CB Keep = stud

99 Walker, Darwin NT Keep = folks forget he played hurt for us all season

52 Williams, Jamar LB Keep = future stud… I hope

59 Wilson, Rod LB Dump = he’s done little

25 Wolfe, Garrett RB Keep = needs to used differently.

All told I see 63 players on this list and I would have 51 by the time it was done. Some of these guys will get hurt and some will be practice squad. All depends on FA and Draft, which will change everything.
