Thoughts on Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame HC as a candidate.

Short list of bears candidates:

Thomas Brown

Mike Vrabel

Kliff Kingsbury

Aaron Glenn

Marcus Freeman

No to Freeman, Kingsbury and Glenn.  If Brown and Vrabel are the best candidates, I will be greatly disappointed.  Vrabel has experience, but not an offensive mind.  Brown will have to show alot quickly.  Ben Johnson and Joe McDonald are hot.  My personal favorite is Gruden.

Thoughts on Bears president Warren saying he will lead the Bears new HC search and Poles will assist.  It tells me Poles is on a short leash

I think that's right. Maybe there are things Poles is good at, like drafting DBs, and things he is not so good at, like picking coaches?

In general I don't think I'd necessarily have to fire Poles, he's done OK. But he sure has done a poor job with coaches. Hopefully Kevin Warren understands the alpha thing and they get the decision right. There's some luck to it too. But i sure wouldn't want Poles doing it solo at least.

If they get the coach right, the rest will probably be OK, assuming he can pick some OL that are actually great.

I take what is the reality that someone is not getting fired so why not hope for the best and complain and hopes Poles does bad and gets fired.

Well Im not hoping poles does poorly at all. I always want him to nail each thing he does. I just think he already screwed up so many coaching decisions that Im not really sure he understands how to make that decision. If he thought Eberflus was a leader, then he isn't reading energy very well.

Kevin Warren may be a blowhard, and he may be over his head making actual football decisions, but for all his bluster, i think he understands alpha leadership so maybe he will fill in the missing piece that poles seems to lack?

Anyway what I just said sounds so dysfuctional to even say out loud, it makes me want to fire Poles LOL

To me, the 3 front runners right now should be Ben Johnson, Thomas Brown, and Kliff Kingsbury. Don't bother with defensive coaches. You cannot put Caleb in another situation like this year where he'll be in a constant shuffle of coordinators every year and allow that to get in the way of his development. Do the smart thing, for once, and pick the best offensive mind who is the best leader.

McCaskey would never go for it, but my personal dark horse candidate would be Gruden.

I am good with any of the names you had - plus I would include Vrabel in there.

My dark horse is they make a huge play for Shanny.

I think Ben Johnson is an offensive genius nerd, and doesnt have the alpha quality we need at HC. He is perfect as OC under Campbell, who is a meathead with all the testosterone you could ever want!

I think you can add Mike McCarthy to the list too.

If you want an offensive guy, I think Kingsbury has the most personal alpha energy. He's kind of an asshole, and thats just what we need.

Also, I know brwn has a good chest, and as a former player he has a kind of Mike Tomlin energy, but if you look at his press conferences, he is constantly shifting his weight from one foot to the other and licking his lips non stop - both are signs of insecurity.

Now hes new I agree, and he may well become an excellent head coach, but right now he does not have that confident leader of men that they say he does. At least not in front of the cameras.

In my past life I was on the Letterman show about 30 times. Sometimes singing background vocals for artists, and sometimes being dumb characters. The first time I did it, I already was friends with the guys in the band from studio gigs, and the theater is pretty small, so I was feeling confident all day. The rehearsals went well, it didnt seem like a big deal.

Then, when we did it for real, and the red light came on on the camera the first time, my hands felt like they were suddenly 10 sizes too large and my arms felt like they were attached wrong or something. It was VERY intimidating. I had no idea.

After I did for a while it got easier. And eventually you get used to it.

Maybe Brown will get used to it, and maybe he really is that confident leader. Its just right now, in early press conferences, he looks nervous as hell.

I bet he will be a great head coaching candidate in a few years. But I dunno if he's really ready yet.

PLLEASE not mccarthy. he rode the shirt tails of 2? HOF qb's. he has done nothing in dallas and is getting fired. he is a meathead.

Thomas Brown is auditioning in real time for the job.

I think they hire someone that has already been successful as a HC instead of being the training ground for first timers.

Vrabel- Kingbury-Gruden?

I dont really  care O or D as long as its the right coach. Quinn-DeMarco Ryan-Tomlin were all D coaches.

OK! fair enough. Im just throwing available names out there.

Looking at Detroit as a blueprint, I might be OK with Vrabel as HC, but we'd need the right OC.

I tend to think we should have an offensive HC, but moving another nerdy Xs and Os guy up to HC is probably the wrong move. The guy has to be a leader at HC.

agree. the top prospect SHOULD be an offensive minded coach. without looking in depth at the candidates yet i will give my first choice as johnson the lions OC. if he can make goff a good qb he has my vote.

I've seen little of Thomas Brown but definitely not enough to say he's the guy.

Vrabel I like but he's not an offensive minded coach so I think we stay away from him.

I've seen the Kliff Kingsbury fiasco in AZ and don't need a sequel.   We'd look really stupid hiring him as HC when we refused to hire him as OC.

Aaron Glenn... I know I have a minority opinion but there has been nothing about the Lions that scares me over the last two seasons.  Neither their defense nor offense and Ben Johnson for that matter.  If we didn't have Flus screwing up two of the last 3 games against Detroit I don't think anybody here would be talking about either coach from Detroit.

Marcus Freeman... admittedly I watched one or two ND games early in the year and they were horrible so small sample size but they did not look like a well organized team.  Hard no.

=====

There's a good young coach out there nobody is talking about. I'm very curious about Joe Brady OC from Buffalo.  He took over the Bills offense last year midseason from Ken Dorsey and kept the job.  They aren't lighting it up but who are the WRs Allen is throwing to?  RBs?  Then there's this:

"2020-21: (Carolina Panthers) • In 2020, oversaw a Panthers offense that became just the fifth unit in the Super Bowl era to produce four different players (DJ Moore 1,215, Robby Anderson 1,111, Curtis Samuel 1,051 and Mike Davis 1,015) with over 1,000 scrimmage yards. Carolina also set a franchise record for the fewest punts (45) in a season and tried a franchise-record 27 fourth-down attempts, converting over half (55.6) of them."

Liam Coen Tampa Bay OC.

After watching two press conferences with the above OCs I'd say Brady is more HC material.

These are a few names sportswriters have been throwing out.  The Freeman one caught me off guard, but I can see that being a McCasky wish.  Today I see Ryan Day and I've seen Dan Lenning Oregon Ducks HC name mentioned too.  This will be a difficult process because it has to be right.  If not, I feel we are doomed for ages.

so true. and while I have some early opinions, I dont see a clear answer. this is the hardest decision the Bears have had to make in decades.

The Warren/Poles press conference was brutal. I have never seen Poles look like a kid who just got yelled at in the other room before family photos.

At least Brown was on point. I really like this guy. I can't believe he was not highlighted more in Hard Knocks. He is a complete 180 compared to Waldron and Flus.

The players still need to execute on the field, but I would not be surprised if they win 3-4 games out of the last 5.

Thomas Brown says the right things. Maybe he is the guy.

But they sat him down this time so he wouldnt shift his weight, but he is still compulsively licking his lips. I counted 6 times in the first 2 minutes, and it continued. That's a classic tell of insecurity.

I thought he looked and sounded confident. He did that all off the cuff and none of it was the bs generic jargon we have heard from Flus for the last 3 years. Also, 3 weeks ago he was the Passing Game Coordinator, and now he is sitting in front of the media as the HC after the OC and HC have been fired. That's a huge leap. He did not seemed overwhelmed by the moment.

I'd be insecure too getting promoted twice in a month and taking over the jobs of my top 2 bosses.  That said accountability is one thing, strategy is another.  We need both.

it might just be getting used to cameras, but he hasnt fully landed in himself yet. I cant possibly guess who he will be in 3 years, but right now, hes a little nervous to my eye. But thats for cameras, I dunno how he is in game and with players.

agree, and yes.

That's the trick to find that blend. I dont have a single name in mind that checks all my boxes. Hopefully in time someone will emerge.

Brown is auditioning for the job, 4 or 5 wins gives him the job. 3-2 or 2-3 and Caleb keeps getting better, maybe. I like Vrabel, he seems most like a Dan Campbell type and has had success. He was doomed because of QB play, here he has it.

I dont know that Brown has any set of things he could do to unilaterally take the job. There are other candidates too, but then again i cant imagine him going 5-0 from here. If he did that, it'd surely be impressive.

I am leaning toward Vrabel too. He has everything I'd want except he isn't an offensive guy.

Honestly there is no one available that I'm 100% on. I'll just have to let it play out, and likely they will make an imperfect hire, and then Ill have to root hard for him to succeed.

But if they pick another HR approved McCaskey muppet nerd, I'm gonna be angry :)

I do love defense, but it's time we join today's NFL and get a coach that is an offense specialist, AND is a leader. We have our QB that can whip the teams in our division and, with the right coach, can be the catalyst for Super Bowls.

an offensive Vrabel would be best. But who is that? I'm open because no one looks perfect to me (yet?).
