Lucky Luciano
an organization that is competent like any other business. an organization that understands professional football and how to maintain high quality players and staff. OUR OWNERS: should be by now smart enough to know they know NOTHING about how to operate a successful franchise. let intelligent football people run the show and stay out of anything to do with football operations until the people they hire as president are proven to be bad and for keerist's sake FORGET/DELETE polians phone number. better yet sell to mark cuban. PRESIDENT OF FOOTBALL OPERATIONS: has to understand how the nfl works and how an individual franchise SHOULD function. his job is to hire a GM and let him do the job a GM is paid to do. the day he hires a GM he should have a board with every name on it to replace the GM if he fails or if he retires or dies. keep this board updated every season with eyes on experienced GM's and up and coming ones. he shouldn't be waiting until it reaches critical mass to start looking for replacements, he should have them now. observe how other successful franchise GM's operate and use this as a sounding board on evaluating the one he hired or ones he would intend to hire. his job also involves keeping the facilities in modern updated condition for staff and players. GM: 1. his first and foremost job is to hire a head coach without ANY interference from the president or owners. input maybe but no strings attached to who he can go after. when he is hired let HIM decide who if any of the current coaches he wants to retain or fire. if he wants them all gone... adios. the minute he hires a HC he should be looking for his replacement. he too needs a board with the names of the BEST coaches he can hire if it goes off the rails. not only existing coaches who become available but all coaches even under contract plus the up and coming coordinators/coaches. if he decides to terminate a HC he shouldn't have to wait a new york minute deciding who to replace him with. salary holdover should never be a consideration. also he needs to evaluate how other coaching staffs are operating, especially the good ones, and infuse this into the entire process of evaluation. if a rare good one comes up get rid of the mediocre or bad staff and go after him now. 2. the same as above in regards to the scouting department for both college and pro. again a board with the names of the best and most successful out there. if they become available GET THEM. it's his job to improve this team to win superbowls not just make the playoffs or any other consideration. just win. his lifeblood will rely on the draft so get it right. this also holds true to free agent acquisitions. have a board with names and use it. if one comes up pull the trigger even if you have to replace an average player with one who is excellent. just do it!!! 3. support staff. his job is to evaluate every aspect on where his franchise support employee's fit into making this a first class organization from the HC to the water boy. realize the buck stops with him. if the team fails it's on his shoulders. all this said, i am sick to death of this mom and pop franchise that NEVER realizes their mistakes or learns from them. it's just the same crap. they hire someone else (usually unqualified) to think for them and then muddy up the waters with stupid input and restrictions on who they hire for ANY position. they are so out of touch with how anything should operate in the nfl it's like putting on a blindfold and throwing darts at the wall. by the time they make decisions, good or bad, the time has past them by to even implement them. to put it frankly, they are STUPID and it seems they are proud of it. i have wasted decades watching this same crap over and over again. different this and that, different day, different season, same results. I agree with all of this! Except for Mark Cuban - but you're exactly right about the structure and job descriptions.
