I like the thought process.  The only thing I would not do is trade Stevenson.  His ceiling is high, especially with a better leader as coach.

I agree. He's been a meathead, but id like to see another coach work with him. Im more worried about his coverage falling off than his antics for that reason.

What I dont know is, why after the blow up against Washington, he hasnt played well since? One play destroyed his confindence? I would think after a few weeks he would have tried to prove himself instead of fall deeper in a hole. A new coach may lift him up but if he needs that to pick himself up, is that worth the risk ? Has he affected the rest of the defensive backfield ? Their play has dropped off weekly.

I think keeping players like Nate Davis, and V Jones around longer than they had value was not good for the overall culture of the team. Is Stevenson affecting his team mats? Terrell Smith may not have the wow plays Stevenson has but he is more consistant. His play has gotten better with every game.

When Tyrique was drafted he did an interview and said he's mostly just a quiet stay at home guy.  He's different on the football field.  It's not a stretch to imagine him dealing with all the fallout of the team since his big mistake.  No chance I'd walk away from his talent for pick 107.   New coaches will give him a fresh start I'd like to see if we can get him back to the player he was.

I'm more of a glass half full person and just question does his inmaturirty affect the rest of the team? Playing worst as the season goes on doesnt seem like a good sign. I'd be trying to prove myself instead of falling in a hole.

Tyrique split playing time with Terrell last year and they both showed signs of becoming staples for the D.  They are back to splitting time this year again.  Tyriques play since that Washington DC debacle has been down, which seems like his heart and desire was ripped out.  I'm sure the NFL and the rest of world made sure he knew how foolish he looked and that is a lot of weight to carry. He needs a great play to shake that weight off and I hope he can get an Interception and return Monday night to do that.  He still has the talent he was drafted for and just needs something to grab his heart to be connected again.

  • 2 weeks later...

Been thinking about this for a long time.  What I see is close, but not solid.

On defense, the Dexter experiment at 3 tech should be over.  He simply doesn't have the instincts to get to the QB.  What he does have is great functional strength.  I put him next to Tez as a 1/2 tech. Start eating buddy.  For now, Walker is our starting 3 tech.  We need pressure inside and out, so free agency and draft should concentrate on 3 tech and edge.

On offense, we have Jones, Jenkins, Kiran and Wright as known keepers.  Shelton, Pryor and Kramer really do nothing for me, but Shelton is the easy choice to keep.  Let the others fight it out.  So, I would absolutely draft left tackle as the highest priority of team needs.  Let Braxton fight.  Keep Jenkins, but definitely have someone that wants his job ready to take it.  This comes in the form of another high draft choice that plays IOL.  Let the rookie develop into a job taker.  I'm seeing Shelton at OC until that rookie develops, as I'm not seeing anything in the free agent market.  Poles blew it this year.  At RG, I see a free agent or Jones or Kiran.

It's coming down to two draftees and at least one FA on both sides of the ball.  I think we all see the same thing.

One last thing that could help the DL is if the MLB would put his hat in a gap like he's supposed to.  When is the last time you saw Edmunds make a play in the hole?  It's always Edwards and Sandborn.

One last item for the OL is Caleb taking the play in front of him instead of hero ball.  He's sacked himself a good forty times this year.  He's tough but won't survive it.

Exhibit A as why I think Poles has been doing right by us.  He’s been mining good players but needs the right coach to get them to play to their potential.  And not play like a clown.

true, but Poles stayed with bad coaches when better choices were available too?

Id give him a mixed grade - some hits, some misses, but more inconsistent than youd like in a guy you want to trust

but are good coaches critical? absolutely!

The last time we had a “winning coach” on staff it was when Lovie Smith was fired after going 10-6.  And making one Super Bowl appearance (2006) with nearly another in 2010.  We were certainly spoiled.
