He may be 1 year younger but Pete is the healthier and more energetic of the 2.  Not even close - not that Bill B isn’t energetic himself. But Pete hasn’t aged in 20 years.

Pete just chews his gum harder.  Bill is banging a 25 year old.  Advantage Bill...

Your point about offense could easily be reversed on defense, too. They've already been down the road of the gritty culture guy and that left them with John Fox and Matt Eberflus, who happen to be #2 and #3 on the all time worst record list in franchise history. As much as we all hated Nagy towards the end, he made the playoffs 2 out of 4 seasons as the head coach, which we would all kill for today.

We’ve also been down the road with a proven D-coordinator in Lovie Smith who not only made the playoffs several times, appeared in a Suber Bowl but was fired with a 10-6 record.

Ben Johnson is the only one that built something from the ground up.  He took Jared Goff from a throw away to a stud.  We didn't think Montgomery was the answer and he made him better.

Not sure I agree on the Montgomery part (about making him better anyway).  But with the claim to Goff and what Johnson has done don’t think I buy it.   Goff’s last three years with the Rams he averaged 4,436 yards, 24.6  and 13.6 INTs.  Last three years with Detroit and Johnson 4,369 yards, 30.6 TDs and 9.6 INTs.  I suppose you could make the argument that Goff’s INT rate went down with Johnson but until last night Williams was on pace to set a record for consecutive throws without an INT.  Was this the result more of Goff or coaching? Before he came to Detroit he had whizz-kid McVay coaching him after all.

And if I recall our O-side of the ball under Lovie was nothing to brag about. I'm all in for getting a coach with offense as his forte. I'm also all in for a coach that can deal with the divas in the locker room.

these are both good points. If we could find an offensive Vrabel, I'd be ALL for it. But if a candidate like that doesnt exist, I prefer leadership over schemes. Schemes are for coordinators anyway?

I think NFL history is full of offensive and defensive guys who have failed, and some who have succeeded. Im not sure anyone can say that one side of the ball or the other is the key to predicting success as a HC.

I fully understand that developing Caleb is a top priority, just as building a culture of accountability and discipline must also be a top priority.

I see the genius (yeah Ill use that word!) of Johnson as an OC, but I have concerns about his as a HC leader.

I see the toughness of Vrabel, and I know he will build a disciplined team, but i have concerns about who the OC will be.

It's not easy to balance these needs. One thing I am sure of is that there is no easy answer, and support for either of these guys (and a few others) is understandable and makes sense.

No one is stupid for wanting one or the other or Carroll or Gruden etc.

A guy like Pete Carroll will know how to run an offense. He wont be giving the ball to a converted offensive lineman at the goalline in a critical moment - he will know to give it to our power back to run in, and not fool around, with, say a slant pass or something.

LOL

Its a cheap shot, just a joke :)

The same guy who didn’t give the football to Marshawn Lynch at the goal line in the Super Bowl to win the game?

The narrative that no good coaches would want to come here is fiction. Gruden, Carroll, Vrabel might pick here first. There are going to be more job openings pop up,  so I would like to wrap a coach up immediately when the season ends . All 3 of them are available now. \

The more I read about Carroll the more I think he would be good here. 73 was the turnoff but he is a health freak full of energy. Hasnt touched sugar for 0 yrs, tells me he is very disciplined but also a health fixture. Sugar is bad for the body.

I think all three of those coaches are culture setters, the players would be held accountable and no bu**sh*t accepted. Vrabel is the yougest and could be here 10 yrs from the hopefully length of Calebs career here. I cant predict who would be better, I would take any of them. I know they all would demand a competent OL.

There is a good chance the Giants part ways with Brian Daboll. My assumption is that the Bears will interview him because he is an Offensive Guy, A Leader of Men, and has HC experience. The issue is, outside of a fluky 2022, they have been terrible.

I'm convinced, more than ever, that Johnson is the guy.  I've been watching him on the sidelines.  He's fiery, charismatic and cocky.  Best of all, he's a complete assassin o of a play caller.

I have been pleased to see some of that fire on the sidelines too. If we grab him, his upside is obvious, I just truly hope he can unite the team and instill desire.

Pelissero said if he had to guess, it would be Johnson to the Bears. He said Johnson is intrigued with Caleb and the skill position players.

When he took over Detroit was 25th in scoring, the next year they were 5th and only added Jamo who had 1 reception his rookie year. So it wasn't personnel. He did that with the same group. The next year he got Monty, Gibbs, and LaPorta while trading Hockenson.

and he definitely understands how important a good OL is. His whole offense is based off their running game. They do amazing things in the passing game, but it's because the defense has to respect the run, and that is because their OL is dominant.

I dopnt know enough about Johnson's personality to see what kind of HC he would be. Staying with Detriot one more tells he didnt think he was ready yet and wanted to go to the SB with the Lions. That was a good sign. Vrabel is easy to read on his old school persona and would do fine. Hell both probably will excel as a HC here with a lot of good players.

Here's an interesting article that recounts some quotes from Kevin Byard's interview with Dan Weiderer about head coaches. Byard played for Vrabel in Tenessee, and Eberflus in Chicago.

Here's the part that resonates with me.  I want other teams to know that they've Ben Johnsoned.  Pun intended...💪🏈

It’s why I think Poles is a loser…he hasn’t gotten the little things right either. Bad usage of draft capital in later rounds and with trades and just wasted picks. Too many luxury picks like two punters, Velus, the trades of picks for guys who don’t produce (Bates, Claypool, some other olinemen, Taylor from Seattle).

A bust like Davis I could get - but given coaches warned him and he ignored - he gets no pass for that.

Poles only plus is he got good value for the number one pick. Any GM could have done that - that wasn’t hard and involved no skill. When it comes to real moves he has shit the bed on all the little things including putting bad oline around Fields (and a year plus with shitty skill position talent) and than doing same with Caleb (from oline). And even getting Keenan - Mooney was in-house and impacted by Fields but he is crushing it in Atlanta.

Look at Poles quotes at what went wrong - he was watching the camp and couldn’t see it. It’s not like this year Flus got shittier with the small details - Poles doesn’t know what to recognize. He is just as much a part of the problem.
