Scheduled Interviews

They are interviewing Iowa State's head coach Matt Campbell. So they certainly are looking deeper than they further have. I have heard only great things about Campbell on a sidebar.  I now wonder if we hear the name Nick Saban pop up or Marcus Freeman as well.  We know David Shaw (former Standford coach) is also going to get an interview (my guess is he could be a theortical OC as well under say Vrabel or a different defensive minded HC).  But Shaw was a hot name for a long time too and did a ton in Stanford (which is NOT an easy place to win).

I would like to hear that they have interviewed two black candidates early too, so the Rooney rule would be satisfied and they could jump on anyone if the time was right.

And that said, i think Aaron Glenn will make an excellent head coach for someone.

Holy shit. I hadn’t thought of Saban.

1,000,000% if he is interested. Best college coach ever. If it doesn’t translate to the NFL it is not about his coaching ability, and more about something exterior like bad drafts (GM), bad ownership (McCaskey), or bad culture (spoiled millionaire players).

Urban Meyer was that college Coach and failed in his first year.

They can stop trying to look like they're not leaving any stone unturned and just grab one of the front line coaches and stop the circus. Now if we don't get Vrabel, Johnson, or Carroll, maybe it's the right thing to do

Surely you haven’t forgotten his brief tenure with Miami? Its epic disaster rivaled Urban Meyer while in Jax.

One thing to note - if Johnson is their preferred / target candidate, the reality is they can't hire him for a while anyway, so if that is the case (or its someone else on a playoff team), than they aren't losing a ton of ground by having all of these other interviews, but may be gaining traction around other intelligence for coordinator positions and / or just gaining far broader knowledge on varying view points across the league.

The one piece Poles/Warren are going to have to be smart about - is if they really like Vrabel or Pete, and most notably Vrabel, than that is the one scenario where they may have to cut the process short and reach an accelerated conclusion as they obviously run significant risk to a New England jumping on that.  Otherwise I think all other teams the general expectation is this will play out and I suspect no other team will hire anyone in the next week.

I agree, and I hope they are smart enough to know that their process comes second to snagging the guy they want if they have already identified him. I sure hope we dont lose out based on corporate stubbornness. Warren is not the most important guy. Im not sure they know that given the Harbaugh thing, but Im hoping that was. just a one off.

If a coach is still active in the playoffs, you can only do a virtual interview. The podcast I watched said all but not sure that's true.

Yeah that is why I have no major issue with them having a big list as long as they are focused and smart on how they are doing it. Because the new rules basically prevent teams from hiring for another 1-2 weeks or so.

Marcus Freeman is one name that intrigues me a ton. No way bears would spend the money and it would be a huge risk but regardless of what happens these final few minutes, Freeman is a special coach who I think would work at both levels (College & NFL).

He just signed a big contract extension he's clearly not interested in the NFL at this time.  I haven't been that impressed by him not even in last night's victory over another marginal HC at Penn State.  Coaches like Matt Campbell (Ia State), Kenny Dillingham (ASU) who do more with less talent and less NIL money are more interesting to me.  I'm sure there are several other college HC who fit that category.   Even so the college game is much different from the NFL and without any NFL experience I don't like going that direction at all.

I have read quite a bit about David Shaw that was the Stanford coach at one time. He is an interesting candidate. He is a Dan Campbell type. Lots of NFL coaching experience. Supposed leader of men. I'll try to find the article and share it.

he'd make a good OC / asst head coach for Carroll to groom if we go that way?

Shaw pretty ran Harbaugh's Stanford program into the ground albeit slowly.  He just seems like a run of the mill coach.  Nothing creative, nothing that appears to exhibit the leadership we desire.

Hard sell at Stanford for recruiting. Harbaugh is much better at it. Shaw just couldn't recruit there, it doesn't make him a bad coach.

Going to be interesting - McCarthy, Tomlin, and Pete Carrol could all options. All with a Super Bowl championship.

Tomlin with a good young QB could be dynamite. Feels like it could be real.

Plus Johnson if you go coordinator. God I would love Tomlin. He has gotten so much from crap since Big Ben retired.

I haven't seen a story about Tomlin, did he get fired?
