Self deprecating humor aside, I am changing my coaching preference.  I'm down to three coaches only.

The only criteria for these choices are experience, success and culture.  That eliminates Johnson.

Vrabel-he's the front runner to get the Patriots gig.  Add that Georgie it's probably afraid of him.

Carroll - one of his personnel said Pete is a guy that makes everyone believe they are a huge piece of the puzzle.  Gets maximum buy-in and effort out of everyone.

McCarthy - I consider him because he knows how to build a culture and run a camp.

Here's my choice, if all I hear is true.  Pete Carroll evidently proposed to the Bears that he has a three year plan, while setting the culture and grooming a replacement.  The replacement candidate would coordinate and be assistant HC.  I can see our set of leaders doing a circke jerk with reach around with this thought process.  I like it too.  If the right guy is groomed.(Johnson anyone?). Pun intended...😝

Pete Carroll recommended Shane Waldron.

I do like Carroll.  He has that energy that you can see players getting behind.  I haven't seen enough from Vrabel, but the Score was bashing him enough were I kind of soured on him on how he lost the team.  McCarthy would be my last choice, I believe he can get the offense going in a direction we need.  As for Johnson, he is my top guy as of now but  I can see Detroit losing a close game and he wants to return to finish what he started.  If Johnson has a strong DC candidate that has handled calling top teams, it's a shoe in.

I do lean towards an experienced HC - Vrabel, Pete, Flores, McCarthy. My guess is it is one of those 4.

Part of my lean is I don’t think ownership knows what a highly competent head coach actually does and all of the above guys are that.

I agree, but Id take Flores off of the list for how he treated Tua - if he ever spoke to Caleb that way I'd fire him on the spot. Suing the league for discrimination is a close second too. What a jerk.

I don’t know what to think of Flores Miami stint. He did a ton with very little there and is an elite d coordinator and holds people to a standard. He also seems to show remorse - but he also expects a lot. I think or would hope Caleb would respond to someone who held him to such a high standard. Tua was too soft to handle it - but the intent wasn’t to knock him down, it was to push him to be great (him begin Tua). But Flores would be last on my list of former head coaches that I outlined above.

But I could get on board. It would be a far better hire than Flus or Trestman were out of the gate.

Almost anyone that comes in here is an upgrade over Flus, so who ever they decide will be welcomed. I can never do the extensive oversight that they do. I think the experience of being a head coach matters. I think a strong hard ass personality will push accountable more. Who they bring with them will matter. I want a more chance taker similar to Campbell. Someone that values defense and running the ball also.

Almost all the information  on coaches is coming from agents not these insider info most people claim.

a ham sandwich would be better LOL

I dont think Tua is soft - I just think if your head coach is telling you you dont even belong in the NFL, that's borderline abusive, and doesnt build a player up. Accountability is necessary but "bullying" isn't. You can be really tough with a player, Im no participation trophy guy. I want Vrabel. I wanted Harbasugh. but i think Flores crossed that line.

Also he is suing the league for racism. Thats a huge red flag for me. Does anyone really think the NFL is racist? And if you dont, Then what kind of a-hole does this?

Flores is too much drama for me. Tough is one thing, but if Harbaugh was too much, then Flores is double too much. At least Harbaugh wins everywhere.

Vrabel to Pats.  Bears hibernating...

Nah if they really wanted him they could have had him.  However it seems this was all a foregone conclusion since the day Mayo was fired.  I saw where NE interviewed 2 minority candidates Pep Hamilton, Byron Leftwich, then Vrabel and Ben Johnson.   Vrabel's interview was in person.   Johnson was virtual.  It appears Hamilton and Leftwich, two coaches who are out of the league, were both in person and satisfied the Rooney rule.  Aaron Glenn declined to be part of that circus, kudos to him.  That is not an extensive coaching search.

Now if we want Johnson he has less suitors and less "good team" options.  Reportedly the Raiders are now interested in Johnson but if there's an organization where ownership is worse than Chicago there you have it.

I think Brady will buffer the crazy out of Davis.

People bring up Brady like he's majority owner. All he is is a PR guy for the team. Johnson will listen but they don't have as good a roster as ours and no QB prospect. We definitely are lead team now. Jax, NO, Jets, not happening.

He’s the best qb of all time - that isn’t something to discount. His voice matters and makes the Raiders different than before. If Bears had him as partial owner (or Manning) we would all be nuts about it too (imo).

But their roster is still awful so I think Bears get who they want as long as they don’t totally mess it up.

The only way Johnson is not coming here is money, like you said I hope they don't screw that up.

Unless they like someone else better. I know we are all reading in the press that Johnson is the greatest thing to ever come along as a coach, and if we do choose him I hope to hell he is and i will be cheering for him, but it is possible another candidate, one with more head coaching experience will be the choice.

True but last year the top get was Harbaugh no matter who else's name popped up. I think Johnson is coming unless he decides not to. I like some other names but in questioning Johnson's culture, he was with Campbell for 3 years, I believed he learned from Campbell.

I dunno if you can learn toughness, but I agree that he is a top name for our job.

I do have concerns, but they are just because i dont know, not because I do know something negative, just the unknown for me. He could well come in and be great. And if he is a our choice then I really hope so.

But Id feel more comfortable with a leader than a schemer.

This is where I am. I'm looking for someone who can come in and bring a system.  I'm looking for the guy who nails Monday through Saturday.  Off-season, training camp, film study, the habits to be successful and putting the structure in place.  If they nail that - Sunday's will go well.  We may wake up in 3-4 years complaining about losing in the NFC championship game - but at least we'd have taken the real and necessary steps forward to build a repeatable infrastructure.

It is why I'm leaning more and more to Mike McCarthy (who Cowboys just announced isn't being retained).  He's 13th all time in wins, is an offensive mind, has gotten rave reviews from his time with Rodgers (remember he worked with Rodgers to rebuild his throwing mechanics) and has gotten best out of Dak.  He will absolutely frustrate us with in-game decisioning, but he knows offenses and runs very good units. He also has a history of hiring very good coordinators (not that he doesn't have his misses - any coach will).  But I think he's the type of guy that can get Caleb to next level. Lets also remember Caleb's ideal was Rodgers - so getting to be coached by the guy who was with him from day 1 in the NFL would be a pretty cool thing.

I also think Cowboys dropping him now after declining the interview is really Jerry saving face cause he knows Mike is going to make a run at this Bears job cause he probably wants to get away from Jerry.  I also think Mike has had to deal with pressure - Packers job is hard, Cowboys job is hard (big media, Jerry, etc)...so he is as fit for Chicago as there can be.

very interesting.

check out his ranking on winning percentage (37th all time) vs other notable coaches. Hes been doing it a long time, big sample size, and he beats out guys like Landry, McVey, Carroll, Holmgren, Parcells, Noll.

His .608 all time winning percentage compares favorably to

Bill Walsh .609
Marty Schottenheimer .613
Sean Payton .618

If you remove head coaches with fewer than 8 years experience (smaller sample size compared to McCarthy's 18 years), his rank would be 26th all time.

The problem I've seen with coaches following "high personality guys" is that the second act doesn't play the same.  Vrabel is the only one from the Belichick tree to break through.  Flores tried to be a dick like Bill and failed.  Who off the Reid tree can match match his goofy swag?  Who off of either Harbaugh brothers tree is there?  Tomlin tree is non-existent.  The only trees we hear about today is shamanism Shanahan and McVey.

It was a lot of blah blah to get here, but if we hire Ben Johnson, there is no way we can imagine him having that monster personality of Dan Campbell.  Can he learn fatherly lessons?  Yes.  Johnson will just have to do it his authentic way or it will come off disingenuous.
