I’m excited about Ben too, don’t get me wrong.  But the proof is in the pudding.  Let’s get him some beef on the lines and let’s see what he can do!!!

sanity speaking.

This is all well said.

I do think that Johnson, and if he brings the OL coach from the Lions to be the OC here, will be able to help Poles identify the right talent. That's in the draft, in free agency, and as much as it scares me, from our current roster. Lots of OL players that have sucked for us have gone on to become good players on other teams. Maybe someone we have will be identified and developed.

One thought, and Im not saying this is a good idea per se, but if Johnson does then it is (lol) might be to move Wright to LT. I dont want to debate that here, because I would be debating against it myself, Im just noting it as the kind of thing that incoming professionals might see. Or maybe Bill Murray is excellent. etc etc. From my standpoint, Wright is good at RT and the rest suck. But players Ive been happy to see go have gone on to be good elsewhere, so if the incoming guys identify someone we already have, then great. But either way they will help find players in free agency and the draft too.

Also, I would recommend using this draft value chart rather than the Jimmy Johnson one. It has been derived from all the trades that were accepted since the JJ chart came out, and better fits the actual league and what they do?

https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-Value-Chart-Rich-Hill.asp?RequestTeam=chi

I said this at the end of last year and it was rejected since we didn't want to make a player learn another position they may not thrive at.  He has the talent to play either side and being a top 10 pick, it's kind of a waste of the slot for a RT unless he's all pro.

We have some bright new offensive minds coming in, so let's see how they think.

yes! my worries about him being too cerebral and corporate seem to be completely wrong. I loved him saying that.

It's true that he isn't a meathead like Vrabel or Campbell. You can see their control coming a mile away. But Johnson has a McVey or Shanahan kind of alpha, and that was harder to see based on all the YouTube videos I could find etc.

But now, it is much easier for me to see who he is. I am extremely happy.

what a great time for us.

I like everything Johnson said in the interviews, but I am also seeing why I (wrongly!) thought he wasnt alpha. Im not saying he isnt, because i now believe he is intense and demanding of his players, and alpha in those situations, but sitting down talking interviews, he does have a gentler more corporate vibe.

And thats fine. It doesnt make me think less of him, its appropriate and fine. It's just that he doesnt always exude that leadership vibe the way he did when he was talking to Halas Hall for example.

You meet Vrabel in a gas station, and youll know his meatheaded competitiveness instantly. Johnson seems to turn it on when it's needed, which is probably even better. but it's why I think I didn't see it early.

Anyway, I'm excited to see where he can take us. I hope he, Poles and Fraley (if we land him!) are able to identify OL talent and fix our front quickly. Cant wait to see what we look like.

Totally agree, I have listened to a lot of people talk that has been around him and he has some meatball in him. He yells and cusses people that don't listen. It just shows us perception is only a lack of not knowing. Totally impressed, he does carry himself like Mcvay.

Ultimately he will judged by wins and losses, and the very reason he came here is because Poles had given him a good roster of talent and Caleb.

He came here because he is a Cubs fan....noooo.  He enjoys rooting for lovable losers like we do.

Finally got to watch the press conference with Ben Johnson.  He was surprisingly emotional.   Refreshingly honest, detailed, and focused.  Caleb has survived this far mostly on his elite talent.  I believe he's going to get a rude awakening on things he needs to work on.  A directness that, IMO, he really needs.  I think grasshopper Caleb knows that as well.

yes, and Caleb will be downright dangerous if he grows like he should under Johnson. I think youre right that Caleb knows it, and wants it. And Johnson will not be shy.

In other news for our former candidates:

Brian Schottenheimer to the Cowboys.  Was he even on any other team's radar?  Was Jerry just looking for someone who would take orders from him?

Pete Carroll takes on the John Fox role for the Raiders.

Liam Coen appears to be headed to JAX?  He might be a good OC but I don't see him as HC material, at least not at this point in his career.  Is the owner hiring a HC before a GM and what does Ian Cunningham think of that?  Plus the backstory of Coen asking for more money to remain OC in Tampa after his interview with JAX and refusing their offer for a 2nd interview.  Tampa agreed only to see Coen refuse to answer multiple phone calls from the Bucs when it was time to sign the new deal.  He had quietly left to visit JAX again.  I can't see Ian wanting to join that circus.

That seems to happen a lot, which you think would be the GMs choice but something's it's the new guy being okay with their choice. I wouldn't take a job where I didn't like the choice.

for sure. Id love that 3rd rounder, but he is too smart and has too good of a future to take that ticket.

It's not any different than what he's witnessed here.  Sometime you gotta shoot your shot and go get paid.

While our Bears family has been disfunctional I disagree.   JAX is literally at the point where the HC is deciding who his GM will be.  I think at times we've been there before (hiring coaches before GM) but we definitely hired Poles first and handed him the keys.. with a geo fence setup.

Our HC, GM and QB have been out of contract balance for how long?  At least Jax is tied together with all three.  Now, if Poles lasts three more years, we finally have the stability we have craved.  As of now, we remain in the spin cycle until we prove otherwise.

If Fields had worked out Poles and Flus would have been in contract balance with him, but I get your point.

David Shaw would be a pretty good OC hire and I like the idea of the former Saints oline coach (Boucher) under Sean Payton (10 years with Payton) joining Bears in similar role. Sounds like a good one.

on paper they do sound good. Boucher may be getting a little old, but honestly my worries or opinions are worthless next to a professional opinion. And I dont think we've had real professionals in charge for a long time. I would weigh my opinion against Eberflus, Nagy, Pace, Trestman etc. Jason has convinced me of that. THey were so substandard that our opinions were as good or better than theirs.

But whether he becomes a legendary coach, or flames out over leadership concerns, I do know right here and now that ben Johnson's opinion on Shaw and Boucher are better than mine will ever be, even if I did massive research.

So I am confident, for better or worse, in Johnson's decisions about this coaching staff. Anything he thinks sounds good to me. And so yeah - Shaw and Boucher sound perfect, no matter the narratives around them, because Johnson says so!

Now let's get Allen announced and signed!
