I'm surprised so many people put all their Oline marbles on Trey Smith signing here.  Especially after the salary cap went up by so much it seemed clear there was no way KC was going to let him go.  I figured they'd likely try to match any offer he got but they've now landed here:

"Smith’s asking price at this point should be somewhere around $25 million a year at a minimum."

I watch a lot of Greg Gabriel podcasts and the day people started talking about Trey Smith, he said they were not letting him out of building. He's a smart guy when it comes to the NFL.

As soon as they announced the cap raise it was a given.  If KC had no room but to go to Mahomey it was a possibility. Now to Dalman

especially after what happened to KC in the Superbowl

With Smith off the board, I figure Dalman and Zeitler are probably two of the top targets as well as an Edge or DT.

It will be nice to get free agency underway and see the 2025 team take shape. We have been let down before, but Ben Johnson and this staff feel different. For the first time since the 80s, we have a franchise QB, a legit coaching staff, a proven playcaller, a solid core, a ton of cap, and some great draft picks.

In a way it stinks that the NFL raises the cap so much that it rewards good teams so they can retain key players.  The Bears have really no one to retain and may not be able to get the FAs they were eyeing.  They can and should extend Gordan.  They will more than likely over spend on some of their top targets since they have so much cap.   Then they need a miracle in the draft.  Carter, Graham, or Campbell falling to 10 would that kind of miracle we need.

Overall free agency is mainly over paying for players. This year, we are just going to have to over pay for a couple additions because we don't have enough assets in the draft to try fix everything there.

But it also means teams retaining their own good players. Like Smith.

We still have $50mil in cap space with 49 players rostered and we haven't cut Ryan Bates ... but we will and that frees up $4mil.  We could also negotiate a new deal with Thuney and perhaps free up another $3-5mil.  Keeping it at $54mil...

Rookie pool appears to be $13mil.   So we've got ~$40mil to spend

If we want Dalman we'll get him.  Worst case I figure we can spend $15mil on Dalman, which is way too much, and $15mil on a DE.   Leaves us $10mil

We will likely do a contract extension with Kyler Gordon but they can use the current year to spread out the impact.

If they sign Dalman, that means they will be drafting DL often in our first 4 picks. Maybe one OL that is multi positional, Zabel comes to mind. I think Poles adds a few extra picks with trade backs to add a RB and another OL.

So 3  DLs, 2 OLs, and a WR and RB.

Thuney is an ironman, he has 3-4 yrs left. I think we extent him . If Jackson stays healthy, we have him 2 more yrs. Braxton plays out his contract and Kiran takes over LT, this year or next. We have a solid OL for 2 to 3 yrs. Draft a couple OL for future and depth.

One thing not brought up to this point is that the Bears are now becoming a desired destination.  Players know how good Been Johnson was.   You have to believe the Chiefs asked Thuney his input on the trade.  They may have even accepted less value in exchange much as we did with Fields when e sent him to Pitt.  In years past we had to way over pay to get FAs here or they just ignored our offer and accepted less to play somewhere else.    Now if we go after Dalman it’ll be would you like to work with Thuney and Jackson outside you while snapping to Caleb Williams to run Ben Johnson’s play’s?  I don’t think we’ll have to pay above and beyond, just be competitive.

Listen to a couple podcasts about Dalman and they were saying he's not a scheme fit for our offense. Sited that Lions  centers were  always big guys .

Went back and looked at Ricky Stromberg draft profile when drafted. He was rated as a eventual starter. 6'4" 320. Was a top 100 pick in 2022. Was voted the top OL ( not just center) in the SEC as a senior.

If he is now healthy, could he be the starter? One of his strengths is football IQ and running the OL schemes.

It's worth a mention. He's rostered this year.

Within Aaron Leming's offseason projection is a simple restructuring of DJ Moore's contract that could free up another $10mil in cap space this year.  That's with minimal impact in the following years.  We've had two big trades so far but if Poles elects to use that extra $10mil there could be two more big signings.

That's the best I've seen the cap explained. The total has been all over the place. So 2 strong contracts left.

I suspect center and DL. If we go Midland contracts , could be 3 center, DT and edge makes the most sense. I don't think it's going to be Dalman. He will be 12.5 to 15, and he not special just the best FA available.

Since he haven't cut Bates, does that mean he's healthy ? Could be Bates, Stromberg and a rookie. The upgrade at OG will raise the play of the center.

At the 45min mark Mark Schlereth discusses his thoughts on Dalman.  If you want the short version...Zimmerman thinks he's just good/average and not worth. the money....Schlereth says he's a whole lot better than just average and details why.
