Bearstalk Mock

We all read mocks and criticize the so called pros who post them. Here's a chance to showcase your thoughts on who teams will draft. I'd like to see your opinions on how the draft will pan out.

I would love to have Otah. I am also thinking that we will take Otah, unless he is taken before we pick. Ray Rice and Colt Brennan. Yeah I would love that also as I believe Colt will have a good NFL career. Sorry I don't know anything about the WR that you mentioned. I am not going to make a mock because I never could. But Miami won't be picking #1 because they have SOOOOO many holes to fill. I see them trading down and picking up multiple draft picks to let the TUNA work his magic. Also Atlanta will take a QB with there first pick.

I'll put out the Bears mock:

Round Pick Position/school

1) Chris Williams OT/Vanderbilt

2) Limas Sweed WR/Texas

3a) Andre Woodson QB/Kentucky

3b) Kevin Smith RB/Central Florida

4) DJ Hall WR/Alabama

5) Best available Guard

6) Best available OLB

7) Best available Player

Analysis: Williams is a no brainer, the best available OT at the when we pick. Sweed will fall to us in the second because of injury concerns and his 40 time. Woodson is a no brainer in the 3rd. I don't care that he has a hitch in his delivery, he is a gamer and played for a crappy school in the best confrence in college football, and threw 40 TDs. You might think that drafting two WR in the first 4 rounds is a bad idea, but when you are faced with the crappy players that we have when Berrian walks, you make sure that doesn't happen again. I think that Sweed and Hall could both be starting WRs in the NFL.

for Otah, his 40 doesn't really mean shit unless it was below 5 or above 6. He is a big massive tackle. If he ran a .3 second faster 40, no one would care, and .3 seconds doesn't mean shit especially when you are a big ugly.

Also, 40 times are the most overrated workout. Last time I checked players aren't running practically naked with track shoes on a fast track when they play football.

Maybe a valid point but I still remember Orlando Pace running down some DB after an INT. I think he chased the guy about 50 yards and tackled him. So while I agree the 40 time isn't a defining stat for an OT the slow time does point out that his quickness and athletic ability might not be as good as people thought. This is important for a LT (which is what we need) because at times a quick DE will get the outside edge and the OT has to run with them and push them behind the pocket. Slow feet won't allow a guy to make that play. In this case the scouts have to look at other tests and definitely see what's on film against first rate pass rushers. More important for lineman I think are the splits when they run: 10yds, 20yds.

You want Craig Steltz in the 3rd? I'd rather have Quinten Demps, who might be the 3rd or 4th best S in this draft. Steltz is like Wolfe, we use a 3rd on him, but he'd still be there in the 4th, maybe even the 5th.

Also, Malcolm Kelly won't get past Buffalo in round 2.

Oh, and I'd rather have Slaton, Smith, Johnson, or even Hart then Rice.

3b) Kevin Smith RB/Central Florida

If we draft Smith in the 3rd round, who do we drop? Lovie is on record saying AP is on any team he coaches. Wolfe was a 3rd rounder last year. Benson is supposed to compete this year. Do we carry 4 backs? Are we wasting another 3rd rounder?

My guess is that we could put Wolfe or the RB we draft on the practice squad. If Benson has a bad year, he walks after the season, and our starter is AP or the draftee. If not, we might trade Wolfe and a 4th rounder to a team for a 2nd or 3rd. Just an idea...

Wolfe could not be put on our practice squad because he has an accrued season of NFL experience.

Because another team can sign any player off our practice squad if put on their 53 man roster, we would not put any player drafted to compete with Benson on the practice squad for that reason (and it would be hard to compete with Benson if not on our 53 man roster). (If another team did try and sign a player off our practice squad I do believe we can keep him by putting on our 53 man roster also?)

We would never get a 2nd & 3rd for Wolfe and a 4th. Until he contributes more than he has I do not see any team trading for him, period. If we did get a trade for him it would be a late day 2 pick at best.

I can only assume we will carry 4 RBs on the roster in 2008 until something develops.

I would love if the Bears ended up with this draft. We would probably look for a SS somewhere in RD's 4 or 5.

As for keeping 4 RB's on the roster, I'd think that if we drafted a stud like Kevin Smith, we'd move Peterson to full duty special teams like Ayenbenejo was.

Be realistic and tell the man the truth: his mock is garbage. You want Woodson? He hasn't even worked out and his motion is slower then God knows what. Also, do you really think Sweed will still be there in round 2? He's arguably the best WR in this draft, and being a former team-mate of VY, he probably goes to Tennessee at 24 or whatever it is. If they pass on him, he probably doesn't get by Dallas, San Francisco, Oakland, Baltimore, Denver, or NYJ.

Unfortunately, there is no way Sweed doesn't go in the first now. He ran a 4.46 40, which makes him a lock for the top 20. I don't know what Malcom Kelly ran, but if it was in the high 4.5s, then I'd put him in Sweed's place. I really thought Sweed was going to run in the low 4.6 range.

Kelly just may go to Buffalo at 11, and if not, then he's a lock to go to them in round 2, if not earlier in round 2.

Are there any WRs that could warrant being taken at 14 instead of going OT? I think it might be an interesting idea because of the depth at OL in the draft and the large number of good FAs considering how slim pickings WR is right now.

James Hardy from Indiana or Early Doucet from LSU are the 1-2 WR's on most boards. After them, probably Malcom Kelly from Oklahoma, then Mario Manningham from Michigan, then Adarius Bowman from Oklahoma State, and then Devin Thomas from Michigan State.

However, none of those 6 are in anybody's top 20, except some have Kelly going to Buffalo at 11.

According to Mike Mayock, there are zero recievers with a 1st round "talent" grade this year. He went on to say that teams reaching for needs will take 3 or 4 them in the 1st.
