Bears | Bradley's status for start of camp unknown

Mon, 21 Jul 2008 07:16:58 -0700

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears WR Mark Bradley's (knee) status for the start for training camp is unknown.

This is no surprise to anyone following the offseason. He had his knee scoped in late May and his readiness for TC was unknown then.

Agreed, I thought all posters on the forum was aware he had a scope done. It does not mean he is a washout for the season. Scopes are done all the time.

He may not be a wash-out, but unless he's 100%, I can't see us using him at all during training camp so that he's eligible for the physically unable to perform list. Realistically we don't have much room for him on the roster.

Last year when he was healthy Bradley didn't see many snaps. Now Booker's replaced Moose, and Lloyd's replaced Berrian. Hester's supposed to see more time AND we've added Earl Bennett. Not to mention supposedly we really like Monk.

In 2006 we kept 5 receivers on the roster and 2007 we kept 6. Lloyd, Booker, Bennett, Hester, and Davis are 5 locks. That leaves the final receiver spot between Monk, Bradley, Riddeau, and Hass. Stashing Bradley away for six weeks seems like a logical solution.

I dunno about that. I think if Bradley is anywhere near healthy, they have to see what he's got during camp. If we were talking about Bennett, I'd agree because he's got more than this year under contract.

Terrible news. He might have been our #1 if healthy. Well, what else is new?

I don't know that Bradley has ever shown anything that would lead me to believe he could be our #1, even when healthy. He would have to make some serious progress for that to happen. He showed some flashes in the past, but that seems like a long time ago now.

Maybe, but don't we kind of already know what we have in Bradley? Last year the staff seemed very down on him. Other then one impressive first half versus Detroit his rookie year, he's done little.

Not to mention, if he's on the injured list, he can do just about everything but actually practice with the team. At camp you'll always see injured players that start working out/running routes, working with a QB, and doing drills on the side field as soon as the official practice is over with. If he looks impressive with his speed at running routes at this time, I'd say hell yes we'd see what he's got. But if he doesn't appear to be better then Booker/Lloyd/Davis/Hester and Olsen (who plays the slot sometimes) we're better off shutting him down for 6 weeks and save the roster spot.

Chances are after 6 weeks, one of our WR's will have been injured and we'll have him to be a replacement.

Either way, I'd be surprised if Bradley is with this team in 2009.

I can see what you're saying LT2_3, but the part about "they have to see" is not a given with Lovie. There were a bunch of us last year that said the same thing, and Bradley was given nothing. Hass never got activated. Wolfe got very little in the way of experience. We had those games at the end of the season where Lovie could have looked at the young guys in game situations, but he just does not do that. Maybe he is not a "developer", just a "user."

I do hope they give these guys long looks before they dump them and they end up producing somewhere else.

I realize this isn't really new news. However, the fact that the Bears are said to be counting on this guy as the potential #1 is a joke. A, he hasn't proven anything in the NFL. B, The only thing he has proven is that he can't stay on the field.

It sounds like Brandon Lloyd has impressed so we have to really hope that he just died in the pit that is Washington and is now rejuvenated and ready to get back to doing what he did early on in his career in San Fran (where people were raving about his upside).

He showed progress last season, first off. Secondly, he could be our #1 because if Booker drops off because of age, Bradley would have to be the #1. I hope to the Lord we aren't asking Hester to be our #1- the dude can't even learn the playbook.

As for the #1 bit, JA said something like Mark Bradley could be a #1 (with his talent if healthy it's possible) then damn near the next day Bradley goes out with an injury. There's no way in hell we're looking at Bradley as a #1 right now.

Could you give some examples with Bradley's progress??? I remember him making a few routine catches and nothing more.

Why do we have to have a true #1??? It'd be nice, but as long as we have a bunch of weapons, we'll be ok. (Why does everyone forget about Olsen???)

I think Olsen & Clark become big weapons in our offense this year and will be complimented with a variety of role players in our WR corps. I do not think we currently have a true #1 on our roster (and I do not think Berrian or Moose were either). We do have some guys who may develop into a number 1 in a year or two. Right now, we have some #2s, some slot receivers, some possession receivers, & some red zone targets.

I really think we will use both Olsen and Clark more this season and thats one reason we brought in Kellen Davis for MSU. Davis has the size and speed similiar to Olsen, why would we bring in another receiving TE prospect when we probably needed a blocking specialist like Gilmore more.

Also, a point on Bradley, as much as everyone is disappointed with him due mainly to injury, we signed him to a 5 year deal. We still have two years remaining on his contract and would be better off putting him on the PUP or injury reserve for 1 more year. No sense on cutting him loose just yet, we may need him more next year with Lloyd's contract expiring. Thats all if Bradley is unable to particate in the majority of TC.

I can't point to specific plays in specific games, but I know this:

When Mark Bradley gets in games and gets touches, he seems incredibly fast, bigger than most, and snags every ball that comes his way. Every time the guy gets in the game and makes a catch, he looks impressive.

The problem is, he's just so frail that he hasn't been on the field enough.

As far as him being looked down upon by the coaches, that means nearly nothing to me...and it should mean nearly nothing to the rest of you. This coaching staff has consistently shown to have a lack of insight and knowledge about player development on the offensive side of the ball.

After a tough injury, he came back and showed flashes of why he was highly touted when drafted. He caught a couple touch passes including I believe his only one against New Orleans where he caught it in between 2 DBs. Just ask jason, who made a good post right above me about Bradley.

Well, we don't exactly have to have a true #1, and it's OK if we didn't but had alot of solid-good players, but we really don't. All Hester and Lloyd can do is catch the long ball, Booker could be like Moose, Rideau- I'm not sure I know a damn thing about him, Hass will one day be elected into the practice squad HOF, Bennett and Monk have low expectations as rookie WRs usually struggle, and Bradley is always hurt. It'd be different if we had Jennings and Driver or Berrian and Rice.

Thanks for the info on Bradley. I was thinking that like Hester, he'd just signed a 4 year deal. The fact that he has two years left with the team changes my POV on him a bit. There's not much sense in dumping him unless someone like Hass or Riddeau appears to be significantly better (which doesn't seem likely.)

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Mark Bradley has been cleared to practice. Bradley had missed a portion of the Bears off-season program after having his right knee scoped.

While Bradley’s injury was considered minor, when you factor in his past (2 serious knee injuries), you have to question Bears GM Jerry Angelo for entering the season with Bradley as the front-runner for the Bears top receiving slot. This is the same Mark Bradley who has a career high of 18 receptions and has played in just 32 games over the course of three NFL seasons.

Yes, Bradley was a 2nd round pick who has flashed potential in limited playing time but a so called “playoff contender” doesn’t enter the season with a Mark Bradley as its best option.

The Trib reports that Bradley is cleared to practice. Hope he can finally stay healthy and we can get some solid contribution from the kid.

Thanks for the info!!! I'll be anxious to see if his speed and quickness have improved at all. He's looked "Moose-like" since that injury his rookie year. (Of course his hands were better then Mooses but I don't know about his routes).

Now that's just being ridiculous. Mooselike? Gimme a break. You are clearly letting your anger get in the way. The guy gets injured a lot, and it makes us all upset, but there is no way in hell you can honestly say he looked Mooselike. When he has been in the game, even last year, he looked fairly quick and strong...and it appeared that he had good hands. That is unarguable.

Trust me Jason, I have no anger towards Bradley. I just fear the knee injuries have slowed him down. I won't get pissed at a guy for that. When Bradley was rookie, with his size & speed he looked like Randy Moss. Damn he was exciting.

In the two seasons since then, I can't remember him ever running away from anyone or making players miss.

When I called him "Moose-like" I was implying that he's more of a big/physical possession WR, as opposed to a speedster. I said he had better hands then Moose although his route's have been questioned.

If his knees could heal where he could show that he's big AND fast again . . . I hope like hell that happens.
