Pixote
Article on the Bears QB situation Reading the article, along with another on the Bears Breaking Camp, I see several points: Smith saying that they would like to know before the 3rd preseason game who the starting QB would be so that it would give them time to settle in before the season starts for real. Smith saying that the starters may play even longer this week in the preseason game, quite possibly well into the 3rd quarter, I assume to give a chance to evaluate the teams starters in depth. I suspect all the speculation over who our starter will be over soon.

If this is true, would that mean advantage for Orton? If both of our QBs play w/ our starters, but Rex faces Seattle's starters while Orton faces Seattles 2nd string, would that not mean Orton has an advantage in this game? xvflutop
Would that also mean that Orton would have the advantage for the preseason up to this point? since it was clear that grossman did not get as many reps with the first team office as Orton in the last game. Ed Hochuli 3:16
Watch Lovie use Saturday as leverage to start Rex- if Orton throws an INT and a TD with around 80 yards, and Rex throws a TD for around 100 yards, does he get the job? I sure hope not.

I sure hope not. I read this the other way - I think starting Orton and then Rex the first week and then switching it up the second is giving an advantage to Orton. Assuming they are equal in talent, then Orton looks like he developed, and Rex looks like he regressed given the change in quality of opposition. I think the staff is giving Orton the edge, but Grossman has a chance to win out IF he performs. He sure didn't last week against the 2nd string. KiLoc69
Well, I'm not sure why but there has been a pro Orton bias in the media despite his many miscues in camp. At first I thought maybe the videos I had been watching were being edited by an undercover Rex fanboy. Then I started seeing posts on many Bears boards from camp goers who had been noticing this same bias. According to several fans who have been at camp and keeping track, Kyle has had over twice as many interceptions as Rex and one more fumble, not to mention Kyle's accuracy problems past 5 yards. Some articles in the papers even seemed to contradict themselves saying Kyle had a good practice and at the bottom give numbers like 2 ints, a fumble, and 5 of 12 in the 11 on 11 drills. The they'd say Rex was ok and follow it up with better numbers. I watch the comcast chicago tribune live show every afternoon and some guys don't even seem to be trying to hide their biases. I thought journalists were supposed to be neutral? I was all for the competition but from everything I've seen and read SO FAR, I think Rex should get the start for the season. If he fails, give Orton 2 games. After that, put me on the Hanie bandwagon. I only want to give Orton 2 games because he has never shown much upside, imo. bowlingtwig
WOW, if that is true that Orton has thrown twice as many INT's as Rex and has 1 more fumble. We were all ragging on Rex for the past couple of years for those problems inparticular. If this is true Rex had better start with a VERYYYYYYYY short leash. madlithuanian
Here's maybe a different spin... The coaching staff, fully realizing that all the world in Chicago doesn't like Rex, make it just unfair enough for Orton to win the "battle". Having won the battle, he starts. If he does what he's done in the past, basically managing the offense...we let the running game, defense and special teams dictate the season. If he falters, then you roll out Rex with no complaints form the peanut gallery. If Rex does well, then you sign him again. If not, you roll out Hanie at the end and do something for the love of all that's right and get a freaking QB! But I just can't get over the overall love the staff has for Rex. I still think Rex will start game one and be on a short leash. It's just a feeling I've had since both guys got re-signed. I just think that the team overall will falter, and tougher decisions than even QB will have to be made... I would love to see Cowher come here... Granted he's only won one Super Bowl, but damn if they guy didn't have the Steelers in the playoffs and usually fairly deep almost every year! Even with bloody Kordell! The last count I saw was 17 ints, 7 fumbles from Kyle, 7 ints and 6 fumbles for Rex for the first 20 days of camp. There seemed to be a consensus on these numbers on the main board but if you really want to count the totals yourselves, you can go on youtube and listen to Roy's commentary for each day of camp. He had video of every turnover for both QBs but the video needs to be taken down after 24 hours per league rules so there's only video of days 21 and 22 right now. I've seen every video and Kyle definately had more turnovers although I never counted exactly how many for each.

CubbiesFan07
Watching both pre-season games, I say that Rex has potential to make more of an impact than Orton does. The thing that's troubling is that if Orton starts, we will never have a 30+yd catch (unless a 5yd catch 25+yd run after). At least with Grossman he can attempt to make a big play, and bring the confidence of the Bears' players up. Our QB's this year are Craig Krenzel and Jonathan Quinn it seems. But must say this OLine doesn't help out the fact of the matter at all either... I'm also starting to understand how Rex throws so many interceptions and makes so many decisions. If he didn't try to force a pass, he'd be sacked 80-100 times a season due to the pressure he's always under. Bears would never be able to make progress because he'd be sacked at least once every possession. Just my thoughts.
