ostrogoth
Kyle Orton sounded unconcerned in his first public comments since GM Jerry Angelo indicated he may bring in another QB, calling the position the team's "Achilles heel" under his watch. "I really just don't have any comment on it," Orton said. "I actually haven't talked to [him] or anything like that, so it really doesn't have any bearing on me." According to a gossip column in the NY Daily News, Matt Cassel was urinated on in the bathroom during the Super Bowl. An intoxicated man allegedly tried to cut in front of Cassel at the Raymond James Stadium urinals. After Cassel told the drunk to wait his turn, the man "barged in and proceeded to purposefully pee directly" on Cassel's leg. Security tossed the liquored-up individual, but Cassel was forced to return to his seats with smelly wet pants. Matt Cassel said he's received "no indications" from the Patriots about the possible use of the franchise tag. Cassel also went on to say that the sides haven't discussed a contract extension and he doesn't know what his "strategy" will be if the Patriots use the tag. Cassel could choose to sign the tendered contract quickly to guarantee the money. There is next to no chance that he will avoid the franchise tag. According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, there is "growing speculation" that the Vikings will make a run at free agent Matt Cassel. Cassel will be franchise tagged by the Patriots and cost several draft picks, including at least one first-rounder, and a $60+ million contract to acquire. And if the Vikes do get Cassel, give up the farm in draft picks and money, will he be anywhere close to being as successful throwing to Wade & Berrian as he was throwing to Moss & Welker? I think the answer is obvious. NO!
selection7
Though he might have been properly coached by the Pats such that he continues to develop, leading into a very successful QB down the road. Plus, he's had the advantage of getting to watch Tom Brady every day. If he went to the Vikings, he'd definitely have a good running game to keep the heat off. For comparisons sake, Orton had 18 TDs and 12 picks while Cassel had 21 TDs and 11 picks with much more talent on his offense. Both players are 26yo, 6'4", and were drafted in 2005. Orton had a QB rating of 80 (same as Roethlisburgers coincidentally), Cassel 89. If this were a video game of Madden football, there's no way in hell I'd pay 4 times more for Cassel if I already had Orton on my team. Real life is more complicated though. I'm curious to see how well Cassel does, wherever he goes.
nfoligno
Then again.... There is no question NE has FAR greater WRs for Cassel, but I would point out that Minny has a FAR greater OL and RB. Frankly, this move makes sense to me for Minny. Think about it. If you asked around, what do you think most would say was the top reason Minny didn't go further this year. I think most would say QB. If you put Cassel behind our OL, w/ our WRs, I think he would be a bust. But in Minny, he would have one of the league best OLs and RB to keep pressure off him. While Berrian may not be great, I bet you Cassel could do more w/ him than Jackson/Frerotte. Further, while it is a #1 pick, it is the 22nd pick in the draft. For a team that believes it is a QB away from the SB, I think this move would make sense. Sure, it is a gamble, but IMHO, they are simply in a better position to (a) take a gamble like this and ( offer a FAR better situation for Cassel to step up in. IMHO, the big question on Cassel not so much about what he can do w/o Moss/Welker but what he can do w/o Billichek. And if the Vikes do get Cassel, give up the farm in draft picks and money, will he be anywhere close to being as successful throwing to Wade & Berrian as he was throwing to Moss & Welker? AZ54
I agree, for Minn it makes sense to put all their marbles in the Cassel basket. They have the defense, the running game, just need someone to make a few passes.
