madlithuanian
BEARS SIGN BASANEZ Posted by Mike Florio on February 3, 2009, 3:15 p.m. Though there could be plenty of free-agent options on the market once the annual signing period opens later this month, the Bears have gotten a head start by adding to the offseason roster quarterback Brett Basanez. The team announced on Tuesday the signing of the former Northwestern quarterback. Basanez previously played for the Panthers. He spent most of the 2006 season on the practice squad, all of the 2007 season on injured reserve, and all of the 2008 season on the practice squad. Basanez was the Big Ten offensive player of the year in 2005. It’s unknown whether Kyle Orton will continue as the team’s starting quarterback. Rex Grossman, who led the team to a Super Bowl appearance two years ago, is due to be a free agent again after signing a one-year deal to stay with the Bears after his rookie deal expired following the 2007 season. Pixote
My guess is it is a contract with little or no signing money and minimum salary which means he will be an extra arm for camp which is normal for all teams. I doubt if he will even make the team coming out of camp this August.
BearSox
He's a body for camp. I'm actually a fan of his, and I like this signing. I still want to see us either go out and get someone like Leftwich or draft Sanchez if he falls, but this is a good pickup for depth and competition for Hanie. Not to mention, it was the only real news we've heard about the Bears besides pure speculation on FA's and the draft... The Bears signed a quarterback? Hell yes that deserves all caps!!! That's likely the biggest news we'll have until the end of February when free agency arrives. I agree with Pix's comment that he's just another body that's not likely to make the team. But who knows? At some point this offseason we'll sign a punter and we'll sign a place-kicker, while Gould & Maynard aren't going anywhere.
Wesson44
IMHO...well there goes Rex Grossman
BearSox
Oh yeah, don't know if it's been mentioned, but this guy is an Illinois native from Arlington Heights, IL near Chicago. Went to St. Viator High School which is in the East Suburbarn Catholic Conference, otherwise known as the ESCC.
Wesson44
I watched him in the past play at Nortwestern and he was pretty good then. But don't bet the house on him as of right now he is our number #3 QB because Grossman is a FA

But don't bet the house on him as of right now he is our number #3 QB because Grossman is a FA He was a good QB at Northwestern. Mobile with a good arm but undersized from what I remember. He is fighting Hanie for the 3rd QB spot IMHO. Peace

I believe Hanie is way closer to the 3rd than Basanez is.

Now JA doesn't have to throw away a late round draft pick for camp fodder at QB. He can waste it on another position!
DABEARSDABOMB
How the heck is this a two page thread. This guy won't even break camp with the Bears.
nfoligno
I don't think that player is on the team yet. I think we will be getting a player in FA, maybe the draft, and will then see our roster change. I think this kid will battle Hanie for the #3 spot, while a player not yet on the team will be our #2. Question here is who is going to be second?
bradjock
How the heck is this a two page thread. This guy won't even break camp with the Bears. Easy!!! It's February 4th . . . the combine doesn't strat until the end of the month, free agency doesn't start until around Feb. 27th, the NFL draft isn't until April 25th. Meanwhile, the Bulls suck, pitchers & catchers don't report for another week, and hockey sucks. In other words, there's not a damn thing else to do. Although I will say that they were talking about this guy on the SCORE this morning, how he's a "winning" quarterback, is like 18th on the all time big 10 list for passing, he's very mobile, and his senior season he kicked Purdue's ass in a game where Kyle Orton was so bad he got benched. Agree with NFO that it'll be him versus Hanie. If not, it means we failed to sign or draft a good QB to push Orton, which is unacceptable IMO. It seems impossible that JA would talk about fixing the QB position, and then do absolutely nothing to fix it. That being said, the SCORE is talking more & more about the likelihood of the Bears wanting Chris Simms. How good Simms was before he got hurt, and how he has the "big arm" the Orton does not have. Supposedly, Tennessee wants him back, but why would Simms return as the #3? Either way, as far as talkbears is concerned, in the middle of a boring sports week, this is by far the most interesting thing going on. (Illinois don't play until tomorrow.) DABEARSDABOMB
I would be perfectly content with Simms/Orton/Hanie (or Basanez). I think Hanie has a much bigger arm though and Basanez was much more of a system passer. Thats just me though. If Simms is healthy he'll be able to push Kyle and while neither are proven stars, both to me have the ability to be above average QB's.
