Wesson44
Could the Chicago Bears gain from Tampa Bay's losses? By Vaughn McClure Looks like firing Jon Gruden wasn't the only house-cleaning going down in Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers released five veterans, including star linebacker Derrick Brooks. Remember, Lovie Smith used to coach the linebackers in Tampa Bay and Brooks was one of his favorities. More intriguing are two Bucs set to becomes free agents at 11:01 p.m. on Thursday: receiver Michael Clayton and safety Jermaine Phillips. Both are far away in contract talks and would upgrade the Bears at their respective positions. The Bears seem content with what they have, but a tweak here and there sure wouldn't hurt. Ed Hochuli 3:16
Clayton had an unreal rookie year. 1000+ yards and 8 TD's. However, since then, he's had the drops and has been hurt here and there. At the right price, I wouldn't mind bringing him in here. Maybe all he needs is a fresh start... bradjock
I'd be happy with both players, especially Phillips. After Yeremiah Bell, Phillips is probably the best free agent safety available. IMO, that's the Bears most urgent need at this point, since the only two we have on the roster who have a realistic chance of making the team are Steltz & Payne. Neither of whom are great. That, and when you consider are track record for drafting safeties has sucked lately, we need to get Phillips or someone in here. Although, Tampa Bay has a whopping 51 million to spend and if they want Phillips, they are going get him. I'm less excited Clayton. I'd much rather see us go after D.J. Hackett or Nate Washington. But we do need to add another body to the WR mix since right now we only have Hester, Davis & Bennett. Could the Chicago Bears gain from Tampa Bay's losses? azbearsfan
I think we need to at least take a look at any defensive players that got cut from TB. They are switching schemes so there might be some good fits there. They would already know the system.
brletich
I anyone else besides me really wishing that Angelo hadn't traded away Chris Harris right after the SB? At least then we would have 1 starting caliber Safety on the team at SS...Maybe it's just me but our safety position has sucked donkey balls since that move. <_>
