Results of a Mock Draft I Participated In

I participated in a 4 round mock draft with our old affiliation (www.nflfans.com) this morning. Pretty much every team had a representative, no trades, and we went straight through in about 2 1/2 hours. Things did not go at all as I had expected them to, so I thought I would share my picks, my thoughts, and the full results:

1) Mark Sanchez, QB, USC - I was truly unprepared for Sanchez to be here and had been preparing to take a WR. But Maclin went right before my pick and all the next WRs batch (DHB, Britt, Nicks, Robiskie, Harvin) were still on the board. Knowing that our back-up QB is currenly Hanie, not being sold on Orton, and hoping that I could at least get Robiskie in the 2nd, I took Sanchez. I'm still not sure how I feel about it.

2) Jarron Gilbert, DL, San Jose State - When Robiskie went 5 spots before me, I was not happy. I'm not overly impressed with the WRs after him, so I didn't want to reach for the next one on my board (either Iglesias or Louis Murphy) for the sake of taking a WR. I considered a FS/DB (particularly Jairus Byrd), but I was confident that at the least Darcel McBath would be there in the next round, and cautiously optimistic I could get William Moore there (who I had drawn up as my ideal 3rd round pick before the draft). Unimpressed with the value at WR and FS (as well as OT), I took Gilbert, knowing he can probably play inside and outside and he's been moving steadily up the draft boards. As it was, a lot of DEs fell, so I'm not sure this was the best pick in hindsight.

3) William Moore, S, Missouri - I get my FS here. Moore may have fallen after a disappointing Senior Bowl, but he's stupid value in the last half of the third round. Strange that I still haven't taken a WR, but again, this is the best value for the pick, since the next WRs on my board (Murphy, Massaquoi, Barden, and Collie) are pretty bunched up, while Darcel McBath is the only other FS I have valued near Moore. McBath goes right after Moore.

4) Louis Murphy, WR, Florida - Three rounds past when I expected to take a WR, I get Louis Murphy in the fourth. It was pretty much between two somewhat raw WRs (Murphy or Ramses Barden), so I took the one who is probably more ready to contribute now. Murphy seems to have all the skills you want in a top WR, so here's hoping he can prove it. Here's also hoping the Bears sign some FA WRs.

There you have it. Even after it's over, I'm still not sure I made the right decisions. In fact, in hindsight, I think I would have preferred to go:

1) Hakeem Nicks, WR, NC

2) Phil Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma

3) William Moore, S, Missouri

4) David Veikune, DE, Hawaii

I thought I would share this so other posters can see how a draft goes when the drafters are pretty much looking out for their own team. I'll probably participate in the full 7-round one we do in April as well, so if you have suggestions, feel free to let me know.

Keep this name in the back of your mind...Rhett Bomar QB. He could be a steal for us and really challenge Orton next year. If you remember, he was the starter for Oklahoma until he was caught getting special treatment and getting paid for a job ata cer dealership he did not work at. If he did not get involved with that, you would have never heard of Bradford as Bomar would have been a stud of a QB.

Rhett Bomar could be our guy in the 3rd or 4th round.

I like the Sanchez pick but I'd have taken Loadholt in Rd 2 and I like picking up Moore in the 3rd.

I dont mind the QB pick in the first round, the only problem is I want our first 3 or 4 picks to make instant contributions , and he isnt a first year phenom; but dont the road a good valve. Also I would have took Loadholt on the 2nd pick, DT isnt a big need and that player is like the 96sh ranked player for a 49th pick. Moore is a great pick in the 3rh round, and Murphy not bad at the 4 th spot.

I would have took: 1) Nicks

2) Loadholt

3)Moore

4) Brandon Williams/DE/Texas Tech

We address 4 areas of need for the next year, other wise if they admit there are rebuilding, do the QB thing.

Not bad:

If Sanchez is really available at our pick, we either A draft him or B trade down b/c 3 teams right below us will take him: Tampa Bay, Detroit if they don't go Stafford, or Minnesota. Heck, I bet New England might draft him if he made it to #23. Thats who we should be on the phones talking to if Sanchez is falling:

Chicago: Pick 18=900 pts , New England: Pick 23=760 + RD3Pick 89=145 = 905 pts

This would help us out since the value at our pick doesn't quite fit our needs, here what we could draft (going off dawhiz draft)

1-23. Hakeem Nicks WR - the next Anquan Boldin

2-49 Michael Johnson DE -compared to be like Peppers who teams also flagged

3-84 trade 84/89 = 315 pts to Carolina pick 59=310pts - Phil Loadholdt OT

3-89 from NE trade- traded to Carolina for Loadholdt

3-97 comp -Derek Peques or David Bruton FS

4-115. Rhett Bomar QB

------------

rest of the draft, take best offensive lineman available LOL

3) William Moore, S, Missouri

I'd be happy with a first 3 rounds of this. One issue is that If Angelo continues to ignore RT, FS and WR in FA, it is going to be relatively easy for teams picking behind us to know exactly who we want and jump in fornt of us to take that player. I think that happend the year Angelo tried unsuccessfully to get randal-el to return kicks and playr wr. I think Angelo was targeting Santonio Holmes, but Pittsburgh traded in front of us to get him.

It's nice to go into a draft not desperate for starters, so that teams can't easily predict what you are going to do. I guess the upside is we're deperate for 4 or 5 starters, so that'll make it a little harder.
