Perhaps no young Pro Bowl quarterback has drawn as much criticism as Chicago Bears newcomer Jay Cutler.

Usually, the topic at hand is Cutler's messy breakup from the Denver Broncos.

In this case, though, Cutler is under scrutiny for his tendency to take risks on the field.

After watching tapes and performing a statistical analysis of Cutler's performance over the past three years, KC Joyner of ESPN.com, per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times, has drawn some very negative conclusions about the former Vanderbilt star.

"I've said it many times and I'll say it again, Cutler will make Bears fans remember Rex Grossman,'' Joyner writes. "He'll make just as many crazy passes but won't suffer the Grossman fate because Chicago's fan base is so in love with him that they will forgive the nutty throws he makes in ways that they never forgave Grossman. . . .

"Whenever I say Cutler will remind Bears fans of Grossman, they get all up in arms. All Grossman did was take Chicago to their first Super Bowl in years and the Bears fans couldn't run him out of the starting spot quick enough. They'll win with Cutler, but, man, will they grit their teeth when he blows a game or two with his over-the-top risk taking."

Wow.

According to Joyner, Cutler averages one interception or near-interception out of every 20 throws.

Cutler has a 17-20 all-time record as a starter.

He has also passed for 9,024 career yards, 54 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions for a cumulative 87.1 quarterback rating.

Maybe someone should remind KC Joyner about those HORRIBLE games that Grossman had WAY to often like the 0.0 QB rating game. lol

It's entirely possible that the Bears' coaching staff and supporting cast could just completely flop around him and turn him in to Rex Grossman.

Hopefully though...that won't happen. And there's plenty of good reason to think that it won't. Like the 0.0 Rating game, the complete flop grossman games, etc. If it turns out that Cutler completely flops given his current record, that's a huge indictment of the staff around him. Because he ought to come in and be a lot better.

he's also conveniently forgetting that early on in 2006 when Rex was doing well and winning weekly awards the fans in general embraced him. The Arizona game alone wouldn't have brought the ire of the fans if it were just a blip. Problem was it was a habenger of things to come. He followed it up with a mediocre game against the Dolphins. From that point on it was up and down the fan base grew tired of the inconsistency an early pick in a game and it made us all uneasy about the rest of the game. As pointed out in the other thread his highs were good his lows were horrible.

And the Bears went to the super bowl that year due in large part to the Defense and special teams more so than the offense sure Rex was good at the start but teams figured him out and our offense struggled due to Rex's inconsistency. He was part of why the bears made it but Jyoner makes it sound as though Rex lead the team to the super bowl. He also seems to forget that in that game which was close most of the way but the offense could never get it done then Rex ended the game with a pick six. Which is when I shut the game off.

IMHO when you have to create a stat "near-interception" to justify slamming Jay that's reaching. His boy Rex by that same measuring stick would have had and obscene amount of INT. I've re watched the early games and one of the things that jumps out at me is Rex got away with things in the early part of the season that caught up to him later.

I will say this though that Chicago fans will turn on anyone if they don't meet expectations. Even Jay if he performs poorly the fans would run him out of town as well. I just don't see him doing poorly enough to get that treatment.

This whole thing about how Cutler is getting treated with kid gloves where Orton & Rex were roasted for their performance is kinda ridiculous. I assure you that if Cutler plays poorly as Rex did, he will be tarred and feathered along with the coaching staff. He is on his honeymoon now. Once he is under fire during the season he will be treated the same as Rex and Kyle. He will be applauded when he succeeds and criticized when he fails.

I hate using all-time record as a starter as some type of measurement for a QB. It takes the entire team to win a game. They love to throw that around a lot.

I like this one, "near interception". Nice way to change the numbers Joyner.

According to Joyner, Cutler averages one interception or near-interception out of every 20 throws.

Cutler averages 1 interception every 33 attempts for his career. You also have to consider how many of those were forced into coverage because Denver was playing from behind (always). Grossman 1 every 27 attempts.

Also, comparing him to Grossman is silly. In our SB year, Grossman had 7 games with a QB Rating of 100 or more and 5 games with a QB rating below 50. What a roller coaster. Compare that to Cutler last year who had 5 games with a QB Rating above 100, and only 1 game below 50 (a 49.8). Grossman had 1 TD and 16 INTs in those 5 games (ugly). There is no way Cutler will ever play that bad. He has only had 3 games in his career with a QB Rating below 50. Grossman has 10. 3 or more INTs in one game (Cutler 1, Grossman 6).

Then think about the running component. Cutler can actually run with the ball, something we haven't had in a long time.

In the end, Grossman is not a good comparison for Cutler.

He's too sure of himself for that...

Cutler's got serious confidence.

Very true.

If Rex walked in here as a pro bowl QB...fans would have expected EVEN MORE OUT OF HIM!
