jason
This should be obvious, but I want to know if ANYONE is actually still defending this tool Turner? I said it last year, and it took another two full seasons before just about everyone was on board with the reality that this guy couldn't call a deadly, unpredictable, successful offensive gameplan if his life depended on it. I was at the game, and at one point multiple people in my section were yelling out the plays when they happened. It was uncanny how successful we were. The run up the middle was a popular play. Is it any wonder that when the Bears run on the edges it's often successful? It's because EVERYONE is shocked. Just like the 3rd down run by Forte for the TD. After getting stuffed twice in a row before that - something that Turner loves to do on first and second - the entire planet knew that Turner was going to run a play action pass (which would be to the TE or FB, and would most likely be unsuccessful). And what did we have!? Unpredictability, BAM!, rushing TD for Forte, and almost nobody saw it coming. Is that so hard to do? Of course, it was the Rams, but being unpredictable is typically a major strong-suit for a successful offense. Now if Turner could just figure out to mix up the runs and play-actions a bit, not to mention ditch the WR screen that gets destroyed 9 out of 10 times. So, after the rant, is EVERYONE finally on board?

jason
You want a gold star???? Peace This time, yes. I just want all the Turner defenders to own up to the fact that the man is a horrible OC, and everyone who thought so was right all along. It has been completely baffling to me how people have defended him at any time whatsoever.

I have the Bear Report magazine that has that picture (April edition - forgot I had it). Will send you a separate email. Peace
defiantgiant
I just want all the Turner defenders to own up to the fact that the man is a horrible OC, and everyone who thought so was right all along. It has been completely baffling to me how people have defended him at any time whatsoever. I'll bite. I was a big defender of Turner's until this season...mainly on the grounds that "the problem's not him, it's the defense." I still think that's true, but the guy's not doing himself any favors. Turner's a meat-and-potatoes playcaller at best: he's not terrible, just very predictable and uncreative. Run up the gut, run off-tackle, play-action pass, rinse, repeat. If he had an absolutely dominant line up front, that could be effective. He doesn't, though, and when he tries to get creative, the results are just awful. The only effective thing in his playbook right now is the screen to Forte, and he doesn't use that nearly enough. Everything else is even worse than the Madden-on-easy-mode plays that he called prior to this year. And anything that might help, he doesn't call. I mean, if you can't protect Cutler in the pocket, why no designed rollouts and bootlegs? If you can't get any push in the run game, why no unbalanced-line sets or zone blocking? If your receivers are struggling with routes and drops, why not THROW THE BALL TO FORTE WHO WAS OUR LEADING RECEIVER LAST YEAR? I defended Turner a lot in the past, just because I thought there were bigger problems, but the guy can't coach his way out of a wet paper bag. That offense has been a nightmare this season. nfoligno
I've defended Turner in the past, and will say this now. Turner is not our worst coach, or problem, but niether is he part of the solution. I do not believe Turner is as bad of an OC as Lovie or Babich are/were as DCs. At the same time, that is a relative statement, and is by no means deserving praise. Last year, I argued Turner did well w/ what he had. It was a poor OL, rookie RB, average to below average WRs and an average QB, and yet our offense did fair. But this year, Turner has shown he can not adapt. He simply refuses to do things that give his players an opportunity, and should be ripped for such. I still think our key problem in terms of coaching is on the other side of the ball. I simply feel we have far more talent on the defensive side of the ball, and our coaches are simply incapable of maximizing that talent. On offense, our OL is simply so bad that I feel few OCs could compensate. Now, Turner has not done what I (and many) have said would give the players a chance, but still, I think our offense would blow w/ this OL regardless what we tried. Turner is a problem. I just feel that if we were listing our problems, he would not be at the top. Up there? Sure. But not at the top. I'll bite.
