madlithuanian
http://chicago.comcastsportsnet.com/pages/blog_moon Friday, December 18 CSNChicago.com has learned, in the strongest terms to date, that Lovie Smith indeed will be back as Bears coach in 2010. That has been my take of the situation for some weeks before this. Now two highly placed individuals within the organization have separately indicated that there will not be a change at the top of the on-field org chart, due in some measure to the looming prospect of a strike/lockout. The same assurances were not there with respect to changes on the staffs for offense and defense. Don’t look for any announcement one way or the other, by the way. Organizations typically do not issue statements that nothing is happening. But this is the first time that I’ve been able to find something close to “statement” on Smith’s future, which is now all but certain to be coaching the 2010 Chicago Bears. DaBearSox
Can we really be surprised though...I mean it's just like the Bears organization to not take part in the biggest successful coaches pool to date... Lovie gets another pass next year because we go 8-8 or something gets canned then we hire some cheap scrub he has a good first season or so and it happens all over again. Connorbear
Well, I didn't expect him to be gone. I was just hoping. My questions: What kind of scrub do they think they will get to replace Turner who we all know will be the sacrificial lamb? Will they make him hire a defensive coordinator? Who is going to want the job with the head coach on such a short leash? Further, if Lovie ends up getting firect after next yr and a new head coach comes in with a new staff, how does that benefit Jay (3 offensive coordinators in 3 years)? Peace
DaBearSox
honestly its looking like the whole damn city needs to boycott the team....we all see that as long as it makes money the McCaskeys will just sit back and enjoy the show. madlithuanian
Yep. It's deja vu all over again... madlithuanian
Agreed. I didn't expect him gone either. I've stated a number of times I felt next year would be his last. Easier to justify a $5 loss than an $11M one. I just hope we don't smoke and mirror wins and give a false positive. I simply have zero faith in Smith. I expect Martz as a OC. He seems to want the job. Maybe he's angling at a HC position. I imagine they will force a DC on Smith. And thus we fall into the mess we were in right before Jauron left. It's just sadly more of the same. Connor, you really hit the big problem right on. This Mickey Mousing w/ coaches will put Cutler behind for many year. I see next year as a wash with moderate improvement while we watch Green Bay, Detroit and Minny potentially get even better. Then I expect Smith gone, and a new regime in. Then it'll take about 2 years for that to kick in. So we'll have had Cutler for 4 years before seeing any real profits. It's virtually like getting a rookie. It just doesn't thrill me. Normally, I'd be excited about draft prospects, FA's, something. I'm grasping for straws.... Well, I didn't expect him to be gone. I was just hoping. Uncle Buck
From the high of the Hub Arkush report from a few weeks ago to this, the absolute depths of hope as a Bears' fan. Mullin could not have depressed me anymore than this. What has the management of this team done to deserve one more day in charge? How can the McCaskey family really believe that Angelo, Smith, and Phillips can lead the team out of the morass they drove the team to. Liken this to a company that goes into bankruptcy, the norm is that the management team that drove the company into bankruptcy does not get to lead it after the restructuring. With all due respect to Virginia McCaskey, the family clearly has no clue as to the long-term strategy of the team. They have no reliable football people to help guide them, Ted the beancounter cannot help, Angelo has proven himself incompetent. The next few years are going to be dire unless Mullin is wrong. we need a clean house, even new management will be saddled by Jerry and Lovie's crappy handiwork. Yikes, I need a drink. madlithuanian
Agreed. I heard Mullin on the score last night, and made mention how the McCaskey's don't deserve the "cheap" lable. Yet he goes on to say how the potential lockout is concerning the organization and is a chief reason they don't want to oust Smith. But, isn't that about money then? I'm confused. Pissed off. Sad. I need a double. From the high of the Hub Arkush report from a few weeks ago to this, the absolute depths of hope as a Bears' fan. Mullin could not have depressed me anymore than this. Lucky Luciano
Can we really be surprised though...I mean it's just like the Bears organization to not take part in the biggest successful coaches pool to date... Lovie gets another pass next year because we go 8-8 or something gets canned then we hire some cheap scrub he has a good first season or so and it happens all over again. i commented on this in a previous post... is there a method to this madness? by dragging their penny loafers they save on two fronts. 1. they don't have to pay (yet again) another coach under contract to go away, no matter how bad, or what this does to the future health of this franchise in time lag. 2. they don't have to pay a high end coaching prospect the kind of money he will demand from this organization. by the time we fire the drones currently in chicago the best coaching prospects will be virtually gone. they won't have to answer to the media or their fan base as to why we didn't go after prime coaching targets. this is basically the same process we used in finding a gm. at this point i just can't believe anyone doesn't believe these moves/non-moves are not a byproduct of this organizations cheapness. how can anyone explain that you don't do what is good for the franchise because of the amount of the money they could 'possibly' spend in a non cap season is the reason that they sit on their hands? 'TD'
To me, the team is always under the cap by 5.5 mill or more it seems. It's not an instant 11 million they have to pay, he gets paid like he normally would. It's not really a huge hit to them this year. They didn't have to fork over money to a first round pick this year or next. I don't see why this would be a financial problem they can't handle. It's ridiculous to go into yet another year with this coaching staff.
Bears4Ever_34
I don't like Mullin. He never says anything interesting. He's like a puppet of the Bears organization, he'll never throw anybody under the bus. It's just his opinion. We'll see how these last couple of games play out. Regardless though, this is the 3rd year in a row that we have missed the playoffs. If it were up to me Lovie would be fired but chances are he will be here another year... I want Bill Cowher to coach this team so bad. He is thee perfect man for the job. His style is exactly what the Bears pride themselves on. Defense and running the football.
