flea
from Tom Pelissero via twitter Can't confirm, so take with salt, but there is strong buzz here that Brett Favre has told the #Vikings today he's staying retired.

balta1701-A
If he says it today, expect him to unretire a week before opening week. I'm sure I'll be wrong in this one somehow, but I don't buy that. If he's retiring now, he's doing so because it gives the Vikings 4 weeks of camp knowing that Jackson is their starting QB with everything geared to having him ready for opening day. The Vikes management may try to entice him back with a better contract offer or something like that, but that would be such a d*** move even for him to do that to that team... fudgeripple2000
Nothing would make me happier than a backfield with Brett out of it and Tavaris in it. That means more in the box and a dialed up pass rush on a quarterback that not only has a history of lack of confidence but knows that he got his shot by default and not by earning it. adam
Minnesota is a completely different team without Favre. This is great news for the Bears. They go from Super Bowl contenders to a borderline playoff team. I figure they are now a 9-10 win team at the most. Rice was a completely different WR with Favre at QB. I can't see Jackson making those same throws. Also, morale had to take a huge hit as well.
balta1701-A
Briggs: "I won't believe it until I see Tarvaris Jackson starting against us. If he's starting, we'll go from there. Either way, we still got a job to do." Clark: "Right now, I don't believe any news that comes out about Favre until it's made official. If he does retire, Minnesota is still a good team. Of course, they're better with Brett Favre, but you look at all the parts they have there, they could still be a championship team without Brett Favre. They have a great running game. Their receivers stepped up last year, especially Sidney Rice. You look at their defense, they still have all the parts. They still may be looked at as the favorites in the conference without Brett Favre. I don't think it drops them down the rung too much." nfoligno
Most reports on the radio I have heard (a) confirm that Favre has been sending text messages saying he was done and ( most question whether this is truly the end of it. Favre is saying his ankle has not progesses as well as hoped, and that he simply can't go. But many know how he loves drama, so this is a great way (in Favre's world) to put a new twist in the saga, only to later come in and save the day. Personally, I think there is a good chance he changes his mind, again, but also think it is more than possible he is done. As the body gets older, it takes longer for injuries to heal. At grandpa's age, some injuries simply won't heal. So maybe he is done. from Tom Pelissero via twitter Can't confirm, so take with salt, but there is strong buzz here that Brett Favre has told the #Vikings today he's staying retired. Connorbear
Until I see someone else at QB for the Queens in week 1, I won't believe it. Peace
Pixote
Last year he said the same thing at this point. Then the day after they broke camp he made a miraculous recovery and returned. They break camp on August 12th this year. I will give it until August 19th and if he is still retired then, I will begin to believe it. In the mean time both Harvin and Rice have had monor injuries already. Should be interesting. If AP gets injured, now that we stole C Taylor from their backfield, they are really out of luck. Until I see someone else at QB for the Queens in week 1, I won't believe it. Peace
balta1701-A
If AP gets injured, now that we stole C Taylor from their backfield, they are really out of luck. Didn't they draft a 2nd round RB this year? (although, just about any team would be SOL if they lost someone of AP's caliber).

Guest TerraTor
Finally, he goes away. But Id be more surprised if he stayed away. Hes just an ass who doesnt want to do camp again
AZ54
Didn't they draft a 2nd round RB this year? (although, just about any team would be SOL if they lost someone of AP's caliber). They drafted the kid out of Stanford, Gerhart. I loved the guy in college and I think he'll be a good pro but he's just a bruiser change of pace RB plus he runs a little too upright. He is not going to give them any breakaway runs like AP can but he's more capable or wearing down a defense than a guy like Taylor. Nonetheless that's a change in style from the quick strike Vikings of last year, especially if they don't have the quick strike QB.
bradjock
Finally, he goes away. But Id be more surprised if he stayed away. Hes just an ass who doesnt want to do camp again Agreed. I like how ESPN reports "HE RETIRES!" Everyone else in the media assumes he's doing the exact same thing as last year. What a pompous jackass. Just please go away and stay away. BearFan2000
Why doesn't he just admit that he doesn't want to go through training camp? That's right, honesty and decisiveness aren't really part of his MO.
balta1701-A
If his ankle is really bad, I wonder if they won't wind up striking a deal where he skips the first 4-6 games. The Vikings have fired back an offer for more money to try to lure him back.
adam
I am just waiting for the 1-hour ESPN special "The Announcement" where he says his ankle has healed and that he is coming back for 1 more season. This almost seems like a huge marketing ploy, otherwise, he would just come out and tell everyone himself.
Pixote
It appears it was all bogus. I got an email from footballguys.com this morning with this information: Source: Steve Mariucci - NFL Network The Minnesota Vikings do not have a timetable for QB Brett Favre (ankle) to report to camp, reports NFL Network's Steve Mariucci. Favre said he is still waiting for his body to heal. He said his ankle is improving but not where it needs to be yet, which has affected his conditioning. Favre added that he has not retired and is still working toward coming back to play this season. Favre said he is also aware of the media frenzy that occurred after there were rumors that he had decided to retire, but he was not sure how all of it developed. nfoligno
One report I read, which is very believable IMHO, is that Favre did send out the text, and did so for a pair of reasons. One, reports were he was getting pressure to get to camp by a certain point, and this may have been Favre's way of saying, "I'll be there when I choose, and you will like it." Two, he wanted more money. Looks like the bogus texts worked as the team reportedly is offering something like $20m for one season now for him to return, and I doubt he will be forced to join the team any sooner than he wants. Also, Minny upping their offer to Favre tells me the texts were in fact sent. Why would Minny raise their offer to Favre if nothing had changed. It appears it was all bogus.
