Moss waived

jason,

I think you're flogging a dead horse. I seriously doubt there's one person here that does not think O Line is the biggest priority. But it kind of sounds like you don't want to do anything about anything if we can't do something about the O Line.

There is no good FA O lineman to be had on waivers. There, however, is a WR.

Now, your second point clears your thoughts up more. You feel like we have some WR's. Me, I don't. We have fast bodies that aren't savvy. I think Bennett could be OK, and I think Hester or Knox could be used every once in a while with success. Knox needs to show more intelligence. He's been here a little too long to keep being that stupid. I'm tired of hoping one of our young WR proppects will bloom. I think they acutally have a better chance of success if there's a pro in the room that can take some heat off these kids. Why do you think Harvin did so well the last few weeks?

Hell, if all Moss is is a decoy and some entertaining press conferences, he's worth the $3.3 mil! At least someone on the Bears will hold an interesting press conference!

...and for all the negative Moss stuff, I really haven't heard his teammates complain. That stuff tends to get out, and it really isn't from what I've read.

1. I hope your capitalization was not meant to imply that the Bears NEED a WR more than they need OL help. Because that would be retarded.

2. "I say it can't hurt..." - I disagree. It could potentially hurt the growth of the Bears' young WRs by keeping them on the bench and/or learning from a guy who has a bad attitude.

Logic! Thank you for that post...

Our WR's suck. Our OL sucks more. Do you not get a cheap WR just becasue your O Line sucks more?

At least doing something about one issue is better than doing nothing about 2 issues...

What are the things that the Bears' receivers stink at? Do those issues line up with Moss's skills?

Moss's skill, as far as I can tell, is going downfield. Have the Bears had issues with guys going down field? We're not talking about a WR who's going to turn around and help his QB out when the pressure comes, or a WR who's going to do a better job blocking, or a WR who's even going to get open over the middle. He runs one pattern, the fly route, and sticks his hand up when he's got his guy beat. If Cutler can't stand up long enough to connect on that fly route...what good is Moss?

This is right on the money. Lots of teams in the league could benefit from having an elite deep-ball specialist. The Bears aren't one of them. Moss gives up on routes, he doesn't fight for the ball over the middle, he has lapses in concentration...all the things the Bears' existing receivers have been struggling with. And sure, he's an upgrade over Knox and Hester for go routes, but that's not where the Bears need to upgrade. Moss doesn't bring the things to the table that the Bears are missing. They'd be much better served with a reliable over-the-middle WR like Anquan Boldin or Brandon Marshall than a straight-line guy like Moss.

Moss' other big value is as a coverage magnet, but I'm not sure that would help the Bears either. Sure, teams will roll extra coverage to him, and they'll play more guys in deep coverage to take away Moss as a home run threat. But you need to capitalize on the room he frees up underneath with lots of short, quick throws. The Pats did that with Welker, and the Vikings were doing it with Harvin before they cut Moss. But Martz has never incorporated a Welker/Harvin role into his offense. There's no way he's going to dial up shallow crosses and slants 20 times a game. Hell, he even sends his running backs on posts and fades. I just don't see it.

I'm not saying sign the guy to a 4 year contract or even a 2 or 3 year contract. We need WR help bottom line. We have almost ruined Hester as a WR and maybe he can learn something from Moss. Maybe Knox can learn how to run the route as drawn up and not cut them off. Maybe he can show Aromashadu get open while Cutler is running for his life. SInce Moss is such the same receiver, maybe he can teach the kids we have now so next year we won't have such a problem at the WR position.

When all is said and done, all we would have to bitch about is the O-Line which yes IS A BIGGER PROBLEM. (CAPS intended Jason). But for the love of God, we have a problem that can be addressed and albeit not the perfect solution or permanant one...it is one. What do we have now? WR's who need to learn and a potential addition who can teach cause it's his style.

Randy Moss teaching people how to run routes? Are you listening to yourself? He never runs a route as drawn up unless that route is a straight line. If he beats a guy on the fly, he goes. If the guy succeeds with the bump or stays with him on coverage, he'll slow up. His method of getting open is to run faster than the DB and to avoid the contact at the line. The idea that the other guys would learn something from him? That makes zero sense given his game.

You make it sound like the only routes this guy runs are fly patterns and fades. He gets open and our WRs don't. Our WRs have speed but can't get open. Our guys get jammed up at the line which screws up the timing and that's what Martz' O is based on. It's based on timing and spots. If they get jammed up the can't get to there spot when they're supposed to. If the receivers get jammed up, that makes it more difficult for Cutler who doesn't have enough time as it is. So yes, I am listening to myself when I say he can show our guys a litlle something. You like this amazing offensive display that we have been treated to this season? To me that move makes perfect sense.

How much time do you have?

Just to name a few...

1. Running correct routes

2. Catching the ball in traffic

3. Catching the ball while wide open

4. Not coming back to the QB when under durress

5. Not fighting the D-back for a ball when Cutler wings it

6. Not lining up in the right formation

7. Giving up on routes

8. Not going back to tackle after picks

Not saying Moss will do all that, but he has done a lot of it for his career. And, he gets calls from ref's and respect from D's. Our guys couldn't get a table at Spire's.

1. Moss will draw top coverage.

2. Moss can fight for errant passes

3. Moss can catch high/long passes

4. Moss is a big body in the end zone

Just that alone is a help. Again, I tress...he is not a cure-all. He should just help. And if he sucks, waive him in a few weeks. The McCaskey's can afford $3m for the remainder of the season...

And I know, the O line is more important...but as I've stated before, if you can do something, anything to help Cutler...it is a help.

Really? He got pissy at some caterer that a player liked?

You think MIN has any good food? We're spoiled in Chicago!

Hey, I'm sure his an a-hole. But he doesn't seem to have the same baggage as owens...and I'd have taken Owens in a heart-beat this year too...

This isn't a make or break move for us by any means. I personally feel it would be a positive. Or at least the potential for a positive.

Cutler is under seige. Not a single current bear player, coach or manager is helping. I am simply proposing we do something to help him before he is turned into David Carr.

Totally agree. He is not the second coming, but what do we have that so great that we couldn't use him?

It's been a year since I had some Chicago Cuisine and I can't wait...hopefully I can get some leave over the summer.

I live in Los Angeles now...but I'm heading out for the 1985 Bears reunion this Friday...and I'm lining up good eats like it's going out of style! Steaks, Pizza and more! I'm ready to gain a few pounds!

The funny thing is, I actually think there may be a few who think that OL is NOT the biggest priority.

Aside from that, I have been calling for Randy Moss and Terrell Owens for years. Each time it was met with "no way!" and "too much baggage!" Well, we could have had BOTH of them at the same time. But nooooo, this team wants boy scouts. Now, however, I just think it's too late. I think that all four of the Bears' young WRs (i.e. Bennet, Hester, Knox, Aromashodu) have a ton of potential - potential that is simply unmet because of the offensive line woes. Shore up the OL and I think that the Bears' WRs start to look a lot better.

Now that's a scary thought! (Sadly, one this current regime seems to hold...)

Fair enough! I totally recall your push to get TO...
