The current press conference has Ted Phillips sounding defiant and also basically saying that Lovie will remain as coach and Ruskell will head the scouting operations.

The only restriction placed on the new GM will be that Lovie will be the HC in 2012.

They said what needed to be said...

 

They believe in Smith still and want their GM to as well.

 

Something tells me, for the right GM for the right price, etc...Smith could be shown the door. It all depends...

 

I would have rather heard the Bears will strongly encourage a GM candidate to retain Lovie, but that it won't be a litmus test.

I see what you mean.

If Lovie is staying, you don't want any element of lame duck. If he's not, there's always "oh well, I changed my mind". Sort of like naming your QB the outright starter before training camp when reality is everything is dependent on how situations can change.
