adam
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teameff Bears are currently 6th overall, mainly due to the dominating #1 Defense and #4 Special Teams. Current Overall Rating 1. SEA* 2. DEN* 3. NE* 4. SF* 5. GB* 6. CHI 7. ATL* 8. BAL* 9. NYG 10. HOU* * - Clinched Playoff spot 8 out of the top 10 are playoff teams, WAS is 11th, CIN is 13th, MIN is 16th, and IND is 28th. I was surprised to see the Bears that high, but the Defensive scoring has been silly this year. Also surprised to see IND that low.
selection7
Hmmm. It even says we have the NFL's #1 defense. So do people agree DVOA is a good stat for doing "power rankings" (so-to-speak)?
jason
It's a good, weighted-statistic, but it doesn't tell the entire picture. Just studying the numbers a little bit shows the Bears are immensely flawed on offense. They have the only negative DVOA on offense in the top ten teams, and one of only two in the top 15 (Cincy). And even considering that is kind of ridiculous when looking at the Bears' Offensive DVOA (-10.2) vs. Cincy's (-0.9). A team that flawed on offense (something we knew without stats) can only be saved by the D/ST so often before it causes the team to lose. Which is kind of why many are sour on this team advancing to the playoffs; we realize it's false hope that will probably let Lovie keep his job while getting ass-hammered in the first round. I agree, we are a completely boom or bust team totally reliant on a scoring defense. Without it, we lose.
