Knowing our roster, free agents, draft choices and UDFA's; what our your thoughts for future needs? (This year and beyond...) I thought Emery has did a great job in both years with his FA signing, but in his drafts he seems to be a risk taker with picks as far as value. Long might be a good NFL starter for 10 years but looking at it from the frontside, it wasnt a good value in the spot he took him. If he was our second round pick we would be saying how smart he is . There is a history with picks that the people that draft well get BPA types and dont reach for players just because there good athletes. I hope he is smart and everything works out, but he instills doubt standing on this side of the fence. His latter round picks all had good value, but the first 2 are big questions at this point in time.
Guest TerraTor
Last years draft was god awful, however I will take my oath that Lovie made all the defensive picks, like he did for the past decade Last years Offseason was top notch. Marshall, 'nuff said ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Long was the best OL available. Sucks we couldnt drop down a few spots Bostic was a big reach. Pick should have been A Brown, in my opinion K Greene in the 4th must have blown their minds, absolute steal. Everything I read is he woulda been in the same sentence as the other guys if he played for a bigger school. Hes a Briggs with speed This years offseason was very good. Got a young LT and TE and got rid of useless players like K Davis

Knowing our roster, free agents, draft choices and UDFA's; what our your thoughts for future needs? (This year and beyond...) This year I think we still need a a run stuffing DT. I somewhat expect Izzy and his long arms to come back and take that role....Kelvin Hayden wasn't that great in the nickle according to the stat geeks at PFF so I would have liked a CB but the Bears saw differently or they have someone else in mind to play the nickle. Regardless though all 5 Bears CBs are FAs next year so I see that as a future need. It's hard to really touch on the future needs of the team. We've got A TON of key guys becoming FAs next year and we have no idea who they can or will resign so it's tough to really say. To me though CB and DT are a "need". I like Izzy but he's slowed down a lot the last couple years. He has never been and never will be a run stuffing DT so if that's the role you want to fill we have to go elsewhere. In terms of next year's needs I'd say it will be CB at the top of the list followed by LB (yes we have two in the pipeline but another mid-round pick here rounds out the group for the future), QB (time to get serious about grooming a good backup QB or replacement for Cutler), WR (depends on how well Wilson turns out but we need something other than Weems down the depth chart and we can't keep paying Bennett $4mil/yr), RB (need to free up cap space from Bush and need backup for Forte as he'll have two years left on his contract but we all know RBs go downhill rapidly once it starts) and last we need a future C. adam
For me, we are in a great position for next offseason, I think the top priority will be getting a top flight CB so we have some flexibility with Peanut and Jennings. If everyone sticks, then LB is no longer a need IMO, Safety should not be a need (hopefully Hardin can get on the field), and DE should not be a need (SMC and Washington need to perform). Maybe DT as the only other major need on Defense next to Melton (or if he becomes too expensive). For offense, I would say RB (Forte has a lot of mileage) and C will be major needs, WR and possibility TE as minor ones. For QB, it will depend on what happens with Cutler. I would not draft high unless this is his last year. If he is re-signed, I would look to bring So my priority would be (CB, C, RB, DT), then (WR, TE, QB). The best part is we can fill some of these in Free Agency and don't have to fill all of them in the draft. I like how Emery did it this offseason with Bushrod, Slauson, and Bennett, not even counting Williams and Anderson, then filling in the rest of the holes in the draft. As a whole it is hard to say this offseason has not been a huge success.

You and Adam really hit on why I started this post. I was in the woods when I sent it so I didn't give my complete thoughts. Next year we will have to decide if we want to sign Jennings and Tillman at corner, a replacement for Bush and heir to Forte, whether or not to extend Cutler and decide if we want Peppers at 16 mil and a replacement for Garza. So, I'm looking at getting DE, CB, RB, QB, DT and C. Things change fast in the NFL. I loved our draft. I think the only thing that would have made me happier would have been to have gotten Schwenke at some point somehow.

I think Peppers situation is more dependent on the two young guys, if they produce he becomes expendable. So CB and C have to be the top two priorities (2 contracts on aging vets and Garza). Getting a Forte replacement a year or two before Forte breaks down is a good idea. If anywhere, I would put DE in the 2nd tier of needs with WR, TE, and QB. I didn't put mine in order. If so, it would be C, CB, DT, RB, DE and QB. I wouldn't draft in that order because I would take the premium positions like CB, DT and DE with the early picks. Really hope QB doesn't dictate a high draft choice next year.
bowlingtwig
We are set up really nicely for future. Full slot of picks plus $40M+ in cap and that's if we keep Marshall and peppers at there high cap # obviously a lot can change but I agree with most that CB and C will be top needs plus a qb to groom

I see next years draft having DT, CB as top needs. C and QB as second level. I see us drafting from 20-32 range again. My initial draft order would be something like rd1-DT, rd2-C, rd3-QB, rd4-CB, rd5-CB, rd6-TE, rd7-RB of course a lot will change in a year. Bloggers before brought up the 3-4 earlier this year and as long as Briggs,Peanut, and Peppers are here, we will be playing base 4-3, but I see in a couple of years us changing over to the 3-4. Washington was the top rated LOLB on PFW and with SCM,Greene and Bostic, I think that works for that scheme.
