Alaskan Grizzly
I'm glad we don't have to hear about Webb being handed the job anymore. Despite what some of you may think I won't be mad if someone other than Webb wins the job. I like everyone else wants to see the best 5 out there. I just liked the fact that in 8 of his last 9 games last year Webb didn't give up a single sack. To not call that improvement is asinine. If he's not adjusting to the new scheme or a guy like Mills or Britton steps up and is the better option then I'm 100% behind that decision. In Kromer I trust. Since SCS seems to be getting singled out, I feel compelled to help him out. This post is indicitave of his 'broader viewpoint' on the subject. He is in agreement to the fact that Webb may not be the best solution at LT, RT or even as a back up. He wants what we all want (and Cutler) which is for the best five to get the job. Just because he notes that Webb may have done well in 8 of 9 games does not necessarily make him a homer for Webb, its just an observation. It would be similar to say that some of us think Cutler is an elite QB. When if you look at the "body of work" and are honest with yourself, he's not. All that being said, I have noticed several times in the last year or so that Webb is out of his league. Not being able to get his shoe on and looking like a child when Cutler berated him on TV as examples of his immaturity. I even considered that with natural maturation and gaining a year of experience, he might have made that transition. But with the recent posting of his twitter feeds and the fact that he JUST NOW seems to realize that he needs to focus, I feel the team has wasted enough time on him. And as SCS points out, so has Kromer.
CrackerDog
Since SCS seems to be getting singled out, I feel compelled to help him out. All well and good until he used the word "Stellar" in reference to Webb. Then I had to say enough was enough. I actually took SCS's side in the whole "Webb is being handed a job" thread because it was clear to me that just because the team didn't announce there was a competition, there had to be one. Or they simply realized they had no other option. Those that were proven wrong, slinked off. One preseason game was enough to send Webb to practice with the second string. I'm starting to like Nerdman and his coaching staff more and more each day.
50england50
Listening to Anthony Adams on espn 1000 he stated that Webb has high end athletic ability but needs to play with some fire. This backs up my thought that he can't find the fire or some might say nastiness inside himself to take himself to the next level. Everyone can get beaten on a play but I would like to see him try to nail someone once in a while. His failing is probably because he is just too nice and placid. He must know that this his last chance and that the bears have invested a considerable amount of time and money and if he doesn't show he's got some balls then he will be cut before the season starts. Like all true bears fans I would like the kid to succeed but he needs to man up. Watching the game against the Panthers I concentrated on watching Kyle Long and although he may not show good technique and got beat he showed a nasty streak and stuck his hands in the players face and body to say your not intimidating me. I have never seen that from Webb, instead of getting a 10 yard holding call I wouldn't mind seeing a 15 yard personal foul where he sticks one into someone to make a statement your not going to kick my arse tonight. Been saying the exact thing for the last couple of years. It's the same thing Tice fell in love with. The thing coach Meat Head couldn't figure out is that Webb is also a Meat Head. He's got time to figure it out as he's still a cheap, experienced, healthy and young option. When I say time, I mean 3 weeks...

I have no clue what to call not giving up a sack in 8 of 9 games is other than stellar. How would you describe his play in the 2nd half of the season? The amount of protection be damned. I watched a few Saints games and Bushrod constantly got help from the OG and that type of protection earned him 2 Pro Bowls and a nice contract here in Chicago. Doesn't Mills getting a chance to play with the 1st team coincide with the whole competition thing? Trestman said in the article about Webbs demotion someting along the lines of not jumping to conclusions. I take that as the job is still up in the air. I'm done with this....I've presented my case and there's just no point in arguing with you people.

I don't think you'll find people argue that Webb lacks the TALENT to be a good offensive lineman. It's the maturity and desire (as you pointed out before). And I think AA has some insight since he practiced and played against Webb in the past. I have never seen that from Webb, instead of getting a 10 yard holding call I wouldn't mind seeing a 15 yard personal foul where he sticks one into someone to make a statement your not going to kick my arse tonight. Seeing this reminds me about previous discussions and observations about Alshon Jeffery. I recall talking about him after his drafting and realizing he was the same player I saw the year prior play in the Bowl game against Nebraska. In that game he ended up getting ejected for all the fighting he and Alonzo Dennard were doing througout. Despite that he, Jeffery, still won the MVP award due to his productivity. I saw that translate over to his rookie year with the Bears. How many times was he caught "pushing off" and other extraneous crap throughout the year? A lot of that, IMHO, had to do with him (a Rookie) going up against many veterans. Anyhow, I agree that if Webb were to display half of the tenacity that Jeffery did we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Your right its best to bail now, before it gets worst and he ends up out of football, and your still arguing (he didn't give up no sacks for two months. AZ54
Right now I think Webb is on the hot seat. Kromer said today that "if Webb makes our top 8 he has to be capable of playing two positions". To be fair Kromer and Trestman have been very non-committal on most of the players. In fact I was surprised to hear Trestman's comments about Britton likely being part of the top 8 a week ago. There is no doubt that Webb is sliding in the plans. Can he recover? Don't know but coaches are looking forward to getting Jonathan Scott back. Scott's health and how Britton plays this week likely determine Webb's future. I think Mills has already shown enough to be considered part of the top 8 or they wouldn't have put him with the 1s at RT. Cutler had some nice words to say about Mills and Long, that both were "talented and wanted to do a good job, and that's the most important thing; if you have a guy that wants to do it he'll figure out a way." In his own way that was a backhanded slap at Webb IMO because we know he questioned Webb's motivation last season.
Connorbear
I've had enough of the J. Webb show. He has all the natural ability but is lacking in the drive area. Peace

Trestman said in the article about Webbs demotion someting along the lines of not jumping to conclusions. I take that as the job is still up in the air. Maybe. But your boy has to play his way into the spot now. It was his to lose and thus far he's managed to lose it. To a rookie drafted in the 5th round! I hope this fires him up but the quote from Webb in that article something like "I don't know if I'll start" feels like a guy who isn't fired up enough to go out there and bust his ass to win it. Unlike others here, I kinda doubt he gets cut. I do see the numbers game they're pointing to though and it's possible, if he falls out of favor enough, he could end up unemployed. PS. I read that Carimi has been slated for a backup role in Tampa. They don't see him being able to beat out either of their starters. Not a surprise to me but I think someone (can't remember who) mentioned that he'd probably turn into a stud. Not so far.

I would be willing to bet that if we watched those 8 to 9 games we would see a whole lot of crap. Im not trying to jump down your throat. I just think it is pretty clear the guy cant play at the NFL level. He is in way over his head. Maybe he has the natural talent to be good, but so far he has not shown it. Rex grossman won player of the month back in 2006. He tore it up. I thought the Bears O was going to be crazy good that year. After that month his play went to shit. We still made it to the SB but largely due to a D and good run game. So I guess my point is a player can play well or even great for a short amount of time and it doesn't mean they are actually good. I personally do not remember Webb ever playing well. Just because he didn't give up a sack doesn't mean he played well.

Oddly enough another former first round pick Chris Williams is apparently fighting for the starting LG position in St Louis, not Tackle as he was drafted for. www.turfshowtimes.com/2013/8/13/4619606/st-louis-rams-position-battles-2013-offensive-line-depth-chart
