Fantasy Defense

It's a boring slow morning for this guy so I wanna compile my realistic "Fantasy defense".

First, I'm gonna go ahead and let Jennings and Melton walk, then also release Peppers to save money(I plan on franchising Cutler)...

I'm gonna sign Jarius Byrd(9M) and Martellus's brother Michael Bennett(6M)

Then in the draft...

1RD- Ra'Shede Hageman/Louis Nix DT....I'm actually liking Hageman more than Nix at this point.

2RD- Darqueze Denard CB Mich ST...Been watching "Mr. No Fly Zone" the last few weeks and I think he's gonna be a stud.

3RD- LaMarcus Joyner CB/S FLA ST...Gives them flexibility to either keep Tillman at CB or move him to safety. I think Tillman stays at CB.

4th- Beau Allen DT WIS- A big boy to compete with Paea.

DE-Bennett-Bass

DT-Hageman-Collins

DT-Paea-Allen

DE-Wootton-SMC

LB- Briggs-Bostic-Williams

CB-Tillman-Denard-Frey-Hayden

Safety- Byrd-Joyner

Not a big fan of getting into draft predicitions, especially this early BUT I do like your thinking.

The first major change (IMHO) is to convert to a 3-4 scheme. Need more middle range pass coverage and run support. That being said....

I'm good with letting Peppers go. Not sure his deal but think his shelf life is expired. Along the line I see Paea, Melton (yes he's still needed) and Wooton. Bass (maybe) for rotational purposes. What happened to Ratliff? Is he going to play this year? Ever ??

LB's: Bostic, Briggs (why not?), Greene and SMC. Williams needs to go. He's been out more than in for the last two years. Eject without predjudice. I would say keep Anderson if I could think of a good reason. Maybe he'd stay around as a back up? (Wish the team had kept Urlacher for one more year).

and secondary: CB's Jennings (he's only one year removed from a Pro Bowl and leage leading 9 INTS) and just signed a new contract (didn't he?) and either Bowman or a high draft pick. On Safety I say Tillman and Wright. No doubt Conte needs to go and another poster suggested keeping one of the two current safeties, of them Wright has more upside. For backup and nickel or dime coverages I'm good with Frey and McManis sticking around. McManis has been pretty solid on ST's. Hayden needs to be jettisioned...the reason, see DJ Williams.

Why not try resigning Melton to a team friendly 3 yr deal. His price tag should come down quite a bit due to his slow start and injuries this year. I would also try doing the same with Peppers if he does not redo his deal for vet min then decide to cut him then and move on.

I wouldn't mind Melton back, I just think some of the high priced guys, I still think he'll demand 5-6M, gotta go. The ACL also just scares me a bit. Maybe it's because of the Rose injury.

Though I think he should be getting the vet minimum, there's no way Peppers accepts it.

Griz, I'd really like them to go to a 3-4 but I doubt it happens.

Ratliff probably returns against Dallas...

I like those picks, all in the same line that I'm thinking.

Nix/Hagelman would be a great addition. I'd like to see size up front to plug those running lanes which has destroyed us.

Maybe we can trade Peppers to Stl for Chris Long. Stl can have the NC connection and we can have the Longs.

I think Jennings is a FA after this season though.

I don't think we are as far off as coaches and Emery have made us to be from having the right personnel for a 3-4 Defense.

Change the focus of the offseason (and Emery will never let on we're doing this) and all you need to add to the front 7 is a big NT and a big run stuffing MLB. We can keep Bostic inside next to the new guy and put Briggs/Greene off into space on the outside. Use SMC, Bass, Washington (fast enough to play LB) as rush outside LBs. I'm not sure Bass couldn't project as our inside MLB but that's a significant change for him.

I think Wootton can play well as a DE in a 3-4 especially with what we've seen of him lately at DT. Some combination of Paea and Melton at DE also works. Ratliff, if we should keep him, has played NT in the 3-4. In the draft we need to add one more NT and another MLB.

I seem to recall in a few conversations I've heard and articles ive read I distinctly recall hearing that 'Tucker has experience in both the 4-3 and 3-4". Maybe means nothing..

Good point about Bass. He looks more like an OLB than DE. Could seem as a 'stand up' guy.

Yes he does have experience in both when he was with jax I believe

Speaking of the defense...Ratliff is expected to play this week. Haven't heard anything about Paea yet, but it sure would be nice to get him out there too so they can then move Wootton back to DE which I think would be a HUGE help against the run.

EDIT- Paea is expected to play as well.

Here's hoping that the majority of the time we throw out a Wootton-Ratliff-Paea-Peppers front 4.

While that would be nice to see I don't think Ratliff is in game shape well enough to handle 50% of the snaps, probably around 30%. That means Cohen is going to get a fair amount of playing time but if that keeps the 4th and/or 5th guy off the field and gets Wootton back to some snaps at DE we will be in better shape.

Why would they trade Chris Long to us for Peppers???

Just watched the Minnesota/Michigan ST. game. Hageman looked rather unimpressive, still like him but my hard on for him has just turned a little soft.

Mr. No Fly Zone, Darqueze Denard, however, continued t look incredible....CBS has him as a 2nd round pick, but Walterfootball has him going 26th overall, which I think is far more realistic. After watching those 2 in the same game I'm now on the Mr. No Fly Zone in the first train.

I think that draft is too defense heavy. I agree that one of the two DBs are probably going to FA, but I see no reason why Melton can't return with a team-friendly deal. My idea draft starts with defense, but fills in a few more gaps as well:

HaHa Clinton-Dix FS Alabama

Darqueze Dennard CB Michigan St

AJ McCarron QB Alabama

Bryan Stork C Florida State

I like all the picks except McCarron. Isn't he essentially a "game manager" and has been playing on a stacked team with a great defense and run game since he has been in college? That just seems to have bust written all over it. I would rather take a true DE in the top 4 rounds (especially if Peppers is let go), or a better run stuffing DT. So FS, CB, C, and DL for the first 4 rounds would be great.

Mccarron ain't going 3rd rd. I'm hearing some chatter that he's in the conversation as #1 QB taken in this years draft. I love mccarron. He can make all the throws. Can spin it very nicely. I've seen a lot of his games and I get more impressed with him every game. And he's a kid that just gets it. Nothing is to big for him. Don't think he's a pro bowler at all but very nice qb to have I think. Obviously all this is my opinion

From what I've seen, that label is unfair. He's been on a stacked team, but to me he reeks of Brady in many ways. He's got the arm, the size, the poise, the timing, the accuracy, everything you need to be a successful NFL QB. On top of that, there's his girlfriend. Tell me that doesn't scream "superstar QB."

I haven't seen that at all. And there is NO WAY IN HELL he's the #1 QB taken. That's ridiculous. In a year with Bridgewater, Marriotta, Manziel, Hundley, Derek Carr, Mettenburger, and Tajh Boyd, the concept of McCarron being the #1 guy is an impossibility on potential alone, much less collegiate production.

Just going by what I've heard the past couple weeks from respected college and NFL ppl. They were saying its because as of right now its completely wide open at that position
