SI Mock 1.0 has us taking Donald

I of course would love this. Was talking about the draft the other day and deemed him "Lil Scrappy". He's just so scrappy in his pursuit of the QB, he can come at you with every move in the book. His size doesn't concern me one bit when you look at guys like Glenn Dorsey, Geno Atkins, and Kyle Williams who are all maybe 1/2 an inch taller than him, dominating at this level.

I want Jernigan

any reaon why you like him over Donald???

I see CBS now has Donald ranked right above Timmy, which I believe is right. (Kony Ealy is 5 spots ahead of them, I'm slowly slipping into wanting him RD1).

Both played in the ACC, Jernigan had MUCH better talent around him, and yet Donalds "disruptive numbers" (sacks and TFLs) blew Jernigan out of the water.

Either of them would be a wise choice, but if both are there I, personally, would take Donald.

Emery last two RD1 picks were Senior Bowl standouts, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Donald was taken.

Jernigan is better know as a run stuffer, only this year he showed some flashes of pressuring the QB. Not sure if that was his role or what.

Ealy would be great too, DE is one of the toughest positions to hit on in the draft.

If you look at how the draft breaks down, you have a better chance of getting a good DT in the second round than you do a impact DE.

If we figure on grabbing a 3-T type tackle past the first round, I figure Donald and Jernigan will go in first round.

Sutton, Quarles,Easley,Johnson, Reid all fit that profile to play the 3-T

After the top 3 DEs go, Clowney,Tuitt and Ealy it drops off quite a bit.

Productive college DEs I like are Murphy, Smith, Jeffcoat, and Crichton. Not sure of who would be 2nd round picks.

Jernigan was a back up his first 2 years in college, but played a lot. Yes, Jernigan had much better talent around him, but he was by far the 2nd most valuable player behind Joyner on the defense.

If you watch him play, he plugged the middle up and no team could do anything up the middle. National Championship against Auburn, he had the flu, but still played lights out as he had Auburn avoiding the middle and thought was their bread and butter all year. When they did, he stuffed them. I was at the game and he was just owning the O-line. What was funny, when i got home i watched the game. The announcers kept saying, FSU best pass rusher us out the game and looks winded. Little did they know, he's the Dt, not a pass rusher. That there shows just was disruptive and force he was a Dt, hat announcers thinking he was pass rush specialists. He was winded because he had the flu and was taking multiple blocks the entire game as Auburn runs 80% of the time.

Remember don't look at the individual stats, but the team, as his job is to clog the middle. FSU was one of the top defenses's for a reason. Plus FSU's starters hardly ever played the second half as they blew teams out and rested the starters in the 2nd half. So the numbers aren't going to show, but his production will in the games was unmatched.

He was the strongest guy on the team and that's says a lot coming from FSU. Not taking anything away from Donald as he was an amazing player, but Jernigan is just a beast

I may be off track here but I feel Jernigan is more of a NT type and I think he can do that very well. SCS pointed out other smaller NT (even in 3-4 schemes) who have played very well including Ratliff. If that's what the Bears feel they need most I'm ok with that because it's hard to argue with us taking any DT who IMO requires a double team. Jernigan can provide some pass rush but it's not the immediate kind of pressure, at least not what I've seen from him, but he will get off his blockers to make plays.

OTOH is pass rush is the priority (this is what I believe) then we go after a guy like Donald first and find a run stuffer later. Donald will require some double team attention due to his quickness into the gap but he can be moved around whereas Jernigan is not going to move.

FWIW I've watched Will Sutton the last couple seasons at ASU. He's not anything close to what I see Donald doing on the field although admittedly I've only seen highlight clips. I like Sutton as a later round pick (3rd - 5th depending on how he works out) because he's just not as explosive off the snap and will often get blocked out of the play and doesn't have much of a secondary move to get off blocks. Donald doesn't seem to quit until the whistle blows.

Ya, I view Jernigan as more of a 4-3 NT whereas Donald is a 3-tech DT. If we resign Melton and Wootton then sign Bennett I'd love to have Jernigan next to Melton. Bennett-Melton-Jernigan-Wootton sounds a whole lot better than say Bennett-Jernigan-Paea-Wootton.....I like Donald more just because he can get after the QB, and he would allow the Bears to move on from Melton and use that money on a safety, or more depth.

I think that draft pick would be there if we dont resign Melton, then he would take his place.

Depends on the scheme, and it's likely to be a hybrid. We drafted Melton as a DE and switched him to DT. Heck, who would have thought Wootton would spend most of the season playing DT?

Even if we resign Melton and want to play him at that spot, how much can we count on him after the injury?

IMO, we can draft him regardless of what we do with Melton.

Melton is still get a pretty good sized contract. If the sign him, and draft Donald that'd be really, really dumb.

I'm guessing if we want Melton we can easily get him at one year for 2-3 million. Last year we franchised him at 6.8 mil and there was not a big effort by the Bears for a long term deal. There was concern that he was a one year wonder. Last year when free agency opened the deals for DT's were underwhelming. He quickly signed his tender in fear the Bears would pull their offer.

Since then he did little on the stat sheet, blew out his knee, and got arrested. Not to mention he still has answered concerns that he was a one year wonder.

Even if we do sign him he remains a huge question mark. We could easily sign him and Ratliff and draft a DT in the first round.

If the Bears can keep Melton and they go 3-4 or hybrid, it basically takes DE off the need list in early picks if not for the whole draft. Wooton, Peppers, or a cheap FA could fill the other DE slot depending on who they sign/cut.

If they don't keep him, they are going to need a DE, CB (depending on Peanut), Nose Tackle, Safety, and pass rushing LB (depending on your faith in Shea). I know some of this can be filled in FA, but it would be nice to have DE as an non-issue.

I think Peppers is a lock to be gone. I know they can and probably will dip into the Cutler/Jennings/Slausson contracts and they have other little ways of getting cap space, but I just can't see how they can field a competant team without getting that 9M from cutting Pep.

If they run a hybrid then they would still need a DE for when they play 4-3 formations. I love Kony Ealy as the other DE. His versatility would allow him to play DE in 4-3 formations, then stand in 3-4 formations.

Hey man I love FSU too, but I watched Jerrigan sitting on the sidelines in the Championship Game.

The guy played with the flu the entire game. If you watched him the whole game, he was unstoppable and couldnt tell he was sick. His body just couldnt take it anymore. The guy played lights out the entire season. Yeah MJ played with the Flu in the finals, but he didn't have 300 lb guys laying into him the entire game. Shoot, I'm sure you take a couple days off from work when you have the flu, imagine being a Dt.

How do you know it wasnt Jimbo who pulled him out when he was puking? As a coach do you want a healthy guy in there or a guy puking ?

My understanding was the when they run hybrids, it's mainly a pass rushing LB drops down to the DE position. With the Bears it would be whoever they sign/draft/SMC. I'm not going to lie tho, I'm not knowledgeable about it at all.

I agree, in most scenario's they need to cut Peppers for the money. They haven't yet, so i put him in my comment.

You're right, but in my world, SMC never puts his hand in the dirt. He's the strong side LB in 4-3 formations and OLB in 3-4 formations. I never wanna have to see him with his hand in the dirt again.

So again, in my ideal world, even if they bring back Wootton they still need a DE to play opposite of him and stand up in 3-4 formations. I would love for that to be Kony Ealy in the first round.

SCS is right, Shea would stay at LB in a 4-3 also. Hopefully his days with his hand in the dirt are over.

According to @TonyPauline the #Bears are very interested in #Pitt DT Aaron Donald - http://walterfootball.com/combinerumors.php

That Tony Pauline fellow runs the website www.draftinsider.com.

Though I don't think he'd be a reach, at all, I still think they can trade back a few spots to get him which would be real nice.

I moved on to wanting Ealy more but if the Bears bring back Wootton, sign another DE, and pass on Melton I'm all for Donald.

I think both Donald and Ealy will be playmakers. I think if we like traded down with SF, and get some extra picks, Donald will be there, but Ealy will be long gone. Would be ok with that scenario.
