scs787
Brad Biggs @BradBiggs 3m #Bears have re-signed C Roberto Garza to a 1-year contract. Garza wasn't bad at all last year, it certainly helped him to have competent guards on both sides of him, so I'm cool with this. With Garza and Boggs re signed I can't imagine they draft a center now. Deal is for 1.5M, not sure if its all cap money or what, I'm sure it will get broke down later

Like the signing. The Oline was so much improved, I say keep the unit together. Should only get better. Wouldn't mind a late round pick at center either
madlithuanian
Not a huge fan, but I like the signing. It's short term. Whichprobalbymeans we will attempt to bring in youth either in FA or the draft. I'm assuming the hit is cap friendly since Cliff is involved. I personally like Garza. Like the signing. Friends with his son, and has talked to him about being drafted. 5th or 6th. Put him on the practice squad and let him learn being around Garza. Back in 2007 we were drafting losers like Michael Okwo as eventual replacements for Lance Briggs. Lance would have been a pro bowler this year had he not hurt his shoulder. Okwo likely has a job cleaning toilet bowls. Currently our o-line has a really nice mixture of two really young guys in Long and Mills, two guys in their prime in Slauson & Bushrod, and one really old guy. We need to make sure we have a competent back-up. Otherwise, we can draft or sign his replacement when we decide to part ways. That being said, his eventual replacement might be Matt Slauson and we could consider starting James Brown at guard. Just a thought. I really hope we bring back Ebon Britton. He was versatile and the offense didn't miss a beat when he played RT after Mills went down.
AZ54
I like the signing, 1yr deal fits both team and player's performance IMO.
madlithuanian
Just because Angelo whiffed, doesn't mean we shouldn't try to bring in players inlater rounds that could eventually be good. All your options you mention sound fine to me. Overall, Slauson, Bushrod and Garza aren't getting any younger. We need to start bringing more bodies in. I don't expect much this year due to the high need on D, but over the next few, we nned to continue to stock up OL talent. I've got to disagree with immediately bringing the eventual replacement. You draft now for two reasons: 1) The possibility of a pick outshining a current player 2) The concept of insurance The former is obvious. If you draft a guy in the 7th, and he turns out to be Jay Hilgenberg, then Garza ends up being a good backup. The latter is also obvious, but maybe more important. Starters go down. Get hurt. You don't want your team taking a nose-dive because a key player goes out.

AZ54
With the recent change allowing for lower cap hits for veterans than what their salary is we can more just as easily secure backup Oline talent via FA. Not saying I wouldn't like to see a couple young guys waiting in the wings but it isn't mandatory to get it via the draft. Regardless, I think we need to keep exploring both options to build the Oline depth. First time in a decade all we're worried about with the Oline is depth.
