Jay Ratliff re-signed

Fantastic, very well could be a starter at the 3 or NT or simply be quality depth. I'm guessing 2.5M.

Now listen to Kyle Long and get Collins back here on another vet min deal.

Why is @BIGN98 (Nate Collins) still a free agent? If I'm gonna recruit id say sign him up ASAP!

Just on the score....Jay Ratliff signs 2 year deal. Wating to hear detail. Great start to rebuilding this D, having an all pro!

Thanks for the breaking news! I like the fact it's a two year deal. We must have seen enough from him at the end of the year to believe he can still play.

Its great Patrick Mannely is on air. He said Ratliff is a team leader, worked his butt off to get back on the field, and is the worst guy he faced on PATs and FGs. He said having his all pro experience in the locker room, is much needed. When he speaks, playersand coaches listen. He also mentioned he will play 3T and NT, and will help bc he can play both 3-4 and 4-3.

With Nate Collins, based on the performance Nate had last year, we would be offering him a one year non-guaranteed contract. Similar to what Kelvin Hayden signed. Based on Kyle Long's tweet, I think we can speculate that Big N98 has not be offered that deal. Which leads me to speculate, that for whatever reason, we don't want him back.

That's a reach on my part and I'd be happy if we signed him. That being said, if we decided to replace him with a guy who might be better or more durable, I'd be happy with that also. You never know how guys are off the field. He was suspended for pot possession previously.

The good thing about being a Bear fan is that if we let a player go, we rarely live to regret it.

It could be wise for him to test the market and see if he can get more than another vet minimum deal. I think he'll end up being back at some point during FA.

Hoping for 2 DTs drafted to go along with Collins, makes the Bears 5 deep at DT.

Are you assuming Melton is back? I think if M,R, and Collins are there we only bring in one draft pick and a vet min.

PFT has the top 100 free agents. The first DT available is Randy Starks at 29. The 2nd is Melton at 32. For the sake of argument, if we assume this list is somewhat accurate, no team has a greater need at defensive tackle than the Bears. I don't think anyone can assume Melton will be back, but we can assume the Bears are the front-runner.

One big question is exactly what the Bears defensive scheme will look like. Do we still even want that classic 3-technique/Tommie Harris style DT? The Bears have been fairly vague about this. Trestman and Emery were both complimentary about Melton, but saying you like something about a player doesn't mean much.

He might be back, 'but I'd prefer they shoot for Donald in the draft, if they end up missing out Ratliff could be a suitable starter if they don't like/can't snag another 3T DT in the draft.

5 guys I'm hoping for are Ratliff, Paea, Collins, Donald, then a 5th or 6th round run stuffer like Deandre Coleman or Shamar Stephen. With Ratliffs versatility as a pass rusher and an above average run stuffer you got 3 guys who can play the 3 well (Donald, Ratliff, and Collins) and also 3 guys who can play the NT (Paea, Ratliff, and the late round pick).

You don't want Melton? Why not keep your exact plan but replace Collins with Melton?

Also, didn't Paea pretty much suck last year? If we weren't so thin at DT, would he be a lock to make the roster?

I have to admit, before we resigned Ratliff, I was starting to think we were just going to blow the whole damn thing up on the D-line.

He has only been average(Paea)but he had injuries last year and lousy line mates. At best he is a rotational player.

I'm cool with Melton coming back, but again I really think Aaron Donald will be just as productive and be half the price.

Paea was dealing with the turf toe all season, I think he's a a quality starter, but wouldn't be shocked if Ratliff takes his job thus making him a quality backup....Plus he's only counting 1.1M against the cap.

I think Paea is quality depth. He's had too many injuries in his short career to be relied on otherwise. He can play at a decent starters level when he's out there. I liked him in the past, still do, and thought he'd turn into a good starter for us but at this point he is what his stats say he is.

I would like Melton back but I'd also like Donald better in his place. Can't teach that elite athleticism, and he hustles too. IMO, if we draft Jernigan or Donald and pair either up with Ratliff we're in a much better situation at DT than we were at the start of last season. In either scenario, Paea is our backup. We should be likely bring back another DT from among our own FAs. I wouldn't rule out seeing Turk McBride (depending on how they felt about him before his injury) or Collins return to. Add in one more 2nd tier DT and we're done. On top of that Emery will toss in one more late round pick, or 3rd tier DT to compete. One thing is for sure, he is not going to training camp short on DTs this year.

If the money isn't right on Melton's demands I'm probably moving on fairly quickly to get the next best talent.

Not sure where they got the numbers since none of our beat guys have said anything but per rotoworld

Bears re-signed DT Jay Ratliff to a two-year, $4 million contract with $600,000 guaranteed.

I was expecting no more than 2.5 so 2M is a great deal in my eyes.

EDIT- Michael C Wright has confirmed it.

That is a great deal, I was figuring closer to 3 since this will most likely be his last pay day.

Indeed, and the 2.5M I was guessing was his cap number. Michael C Wright just told me that based on his contract he thinks his cap hit will be around 1.4, which would be fantastic for what he can potentially bring.

If he's right, and they decide to bring back Collins that's potentially 2 solid guys signed for under 2M in cap space. My hopes is they add Donald who would cost them 1.7M and then a 5th round run stuffer who will cost them 467k.....DT would be fixed for just over 4M.

I watched this video on the Chicago Bears website and have even more appreciation for what Ratliff will mean for our new Dline. Shots of him coaching guys like Wootton on how to play the position are great to see. Add in his experience playing at a Pro Bowl level (even if he doesn't get back to that) will benefit those around him.
