Alaskan Grizzly
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/...family-reunion/ So in essence a swap Peppers (out) for Bennett (in )? That's kinda the feeling I get . What are the cost comparables? I'm sure someone's made the notation somewhere(?). I know Peppers cap hit is a certain amount but if Bennett were signed in the $8-$10mil/year range (that's his probable range isn't it?) is it better / worse overall than Peppers? The only real advantage I can see right now is that Bennett has age (and I'm assuming cost) since last year Peppers had more total tackles: 46 to 31 and was only one less in sacks 7.5 to. 8.5. This coming from Bennett playing for a better defensive team than did Peppers last year.

I've been preaching for Bennett and breaking down different angles. The numbers on paper look like Peppers is close to on par with him, but you have to dig a little deeper. -Peppers played 724 snaps compared to 569 for Bennett (Seattle had a ridiculously deep line). -Bennett also played a good deal inside. -According to Biggs, Peppers only had 15 pressures....Bennett? 66. Pepper cap hit this year is 14M, it saves the Bears 9.8M to cut him....I expect Bennett to get a little less than that in year 1 of his contract. I'm thinking 8M, so essentially that's money for Ratliff and Bennett.

I have to admit that I don't get on the site a whole lot this time of year. And when I do I see a lot of mock draft talk (not my thing) and numbers regarding FA. After a bit it starts to glaze me over similar to how Patrick Starfish looks regularly. Thanks for the breakdown. It does make more sense to go Bennett especially given the numbers and the possibility in a 2 for 1 deal like Bennett/Ratliff vs Peppers. That and the age factor. Although Pep has proven himself Bennett is still in the proving stage of his career.
bradjock
Yeah Bennett+Ratliff>>>>>>Peppers Immediately yes. But Hub Arkush had an interesting article on how Bennett at his best is not as good as Peppers at his best. More importantly, last season we started with Peppers and Melton. If we lose both of them, even if we signed Bennett, that's a big step back from where we were at the start of the 2013 season. I'm in the minority, but I believe that Peppers could bounce back and have a big season. While I'll be happy if we signed Bennett, I'm worried about the fact we are likely going to have to over-pay for him. At his best, he's really good, but we're going to have to pay him like he's great.

They'll find a replacement for Melton as well. Hopefully Donald is that guy, or perhaps it could be Melton again.

($$$) I agree that Bennett is never going to be as good as Peppers was but will they be equal at this point in their careers?

Bennett is going to get Julius Peppers. I'm guessing he'll get 40+ guaranteed for an 80+ contract. That's a far cry from the 5 year 50 $$$ we originally thought. Do you still want to sign Bennett for that amount?

Gah, I guess it depends on if they plan on dipping into the Cutler/Jennings/Slausson deals Which for the right situation I believe the will do what they gotta do. The cap number is all I care about as a fan, I think the tops I'd go cap wise is 12M. That's 4M more than I thought and in my mock offseason I had the Bears taking 2M out of Cuttys contract....I also had them spending another 2M on a DE who I now think would be over kill, so scratch that, take another 2M of the Cutler deal, or a mill off Jennings/Slaus and it's still possible without sacrificing depth. In the end, with DE being slim pickins in the draft the Bears need to find SOMEONE who can make an impact at that position....I don't think Peppers is that guy anymore. Pep was going 1 on 1 all season so it's not a matter of pair him with a better line and he'll be an impact player again.

If you think it's a championship move, go for it. I don't see Bennett as the missing piece to a good enough defense. I'd rather build the economical way by using the draft and reasonable FA contacts. Get an identity first, then put the cherry on top.

But I've gone from full on optimistic to just "so you're saying there is a chance" mode. I think Bennett is certainly a step towards a championship team, he was after all the best lineman on Seattle last year. To expand on the whole DEs being slim pickins in the draft, take a look at next years FA group... I'd understand misspelling Ozougwo or something like that but for god sake man! I still think there's a chance, albeit a lot slimmer of a chance. This is a football forum and your the only one that it annoys. I dont know if you noticed many other people make spelling mistakes, but I seem to be the only one that annoys you. AZ54
I've been saying I don't want to break the bank on Bennett and that's where the market appears to be headed. At this point it seems like keeping Peppers is a better deal and focus spending our money on the DTs. Build a strong interior of the line and we'll go after DEs in the draft. See if a guy like Jared Allen is looking for reasonable money to be a 3rd down specialist.

I'll make this my last post on the subject since it's apparently touch, I don't care if you misspell the word "dog", it's just the Ratlcliffs and the Truitts that annoy men. We see the names a million times and we've heard em a million times.....Hell I myself have been making common grammer mistakes and misspelling words, that's fine cause as you said this is a football board. And for the millionth time I don't hate you....Hell my best friend constantly used to call Kyle Korver, Kyle Kulver, and he used to call Batista (Yes I'm a wresling fan) Balista for some reason and I got him every single time....Does that mean I don't like him? Of course not Again, I don't wanna make this more than it is so reply if you must but I will be backing away.

Just so you know , all the fingers on my right hand are numb all the time, it sometimes makes it hard to hit the right keys, 90% of my misspelled words are key screwups and I dont always have the time like you to go back and proof read my posts.
