He was with Chicago for nine years (2004-12). I wouldn't mind this. I wouldn't either. I did not watch him at all last year, not sure how many snaps he got or what he did on the field but I do think he was useful when with the bears

scs787
I wouldn't either. I did not watch him at all last year, not sure how many snaps he got or what he did on the field but I do think he was useful when with the bears 330 snaps. So he could be somewhat fresh so to speak. I read somewhere that he was just asked to stop the run in Detroit He'd be nice depth and gives the Bears another DE who's real good against the run and has the versatility to play inside and out. BearFan PHX
Kills two birds with one stone... DT or DE I think this opens us up to be able to take the best defensive lineman available at the 14th pick without regard to position. It also opens the possibility of taking the best defensive player at any position off the board at #14, which is a good position to be in, or rather the result of a BAD position, but flexible! Hopefully it's an unrelated move. Probably means no Wootton though.

Adam Hoge via 670thescore.com reported by his figures, the Bears have $5.056 million in cap space and they need to allocate 5 million for the draft. In other words, pending cutting a guy or restructuring (which we could easily do) the Bears are currently capped out. He's thinking that this means no Wootton, no Melton, and no Jared Allen. He figures we will look at veteran minimum guys. Like Izzy. As our defense collapsed last season, I kept thinking what a bad mistake it was not to have Izzy. Guy never gets hurt and he's not terrible. That's two things we needed from d-linemen last year.

I don't know if it's correct, but overthecap.com says the Bears need a little over 2M in cap space for the draft. They don't have Tillmans cap number up yet, but 5M sounds about right. I doubt they do it, but if they need money they can dump Weems AND Bennett (replaced by Chris Williams and Hixon) to free up 3.5 mill. That gives em ~8.5 mill. If they really only need 2 mill for the draft maybe they can give Melton a 1 year 5 mill dollar contract that would still fit in the budget. AZ54
At this point in his career I'd say he was signed to be a backup DT, most likely to be used for passing downs.

I just dont think he fit in in Detroit, he is a better player than he showed last year. I think he has some gas left. If we miss on Melton, or think the lawsuit is to big of a stumbling block, I would like to see him back.
bradjock
At this point in his career I'd say he was signed to be a backup DT, most likely to be used for passing downs. Why is he now a DT? He played there some with the Bears out of necessity. I don't know if that was ever his best position. I guess I'm thinking about something Steve Rosenbloom wrote about in the Trib in how we play guys out of position. We draft Shea who is a linebacker and we play him at DE. Houston is build like a tackle and we have no choice to play him at end.

Houston is build like a tackle and we have no choice to play him at end. He was never quick around the corner and he's not quicker today than he was two years ago. He was good inside as a pass rusher and I'm sure he can play some DE for us on run downs. I don't see him as the special teams ace he was 5 years ago either. Overall, I think he's just another "versatile" player Emery and Trestman seek. Having said that, why tie up cap space on Izzy in his 12th season at DE when they've stated they want to get younger on defense and have all these players competing at DE: Houston Young Bass Lane Washington Ozougwu Robertson Scott and we still have part time rusher in SMC, and I expect we'll add someone via the draft. A draftee puts us at 9 DEs on the roster, 10 if we add Izzy to the mix. Or they cut someone. At DT on our roster we have: Collins Paea At NT we have: Ratliff At some point when you get to training camp there are only so many reps to go around and working 10 players through DE competition. I don't seriously think guys like Tracy Robertson, 6-4 285lbs 5.1 forty, are contenders as pass rushers either. He's competition for whatever role they envision for Izzy. Someone like Trevor Scott, 6-5 ran a 4.54 forty is in competition for a job as an edge rusher. Nothing stops them from cutting some of these bottom roster guys either. It's hard to know since we are changing our defensive scheme but one year removed from letting Izzy go from our DE group we suddenly decide he's the answer on the edge. Seems odd to me. The question remains, are we going to use some 3-4 looks? While we are not going all out to a 3-4, when I see a guy like Izzy I can see him doing well as a situational 3-4 DE. When the Seahawks started there rebuilding process they brought tons of players in and keep turning them over till they started to get the roster they wanted. I think we are kinda doing , just bringing in players and sorting it out. I think if we sign Izzy it is just a fall back position if some players dont pan out and we cant upgrade in the draft. Many wont be on the opening day roster, but at least we have more options going forward.
jason
Would love to see him come back. We should have never let him leave. Peace Hold up. You have that stance on Izzy, an inarguable average, albeit reliable, player for 9 years with the Bears, but you were basically leading the charge on this board for the ouster of Urlacher and Hester, saying they were worth no more than vet minimum (or thereabouts)? bradjock
In case you missed it, Houston said he was playing around 275 last year.....I always wonder if players listed weights on sites like espn ever even change. He might be 275 now, but if we asked him to add 20 pounds to play DT, it wouldn't take that much. A bunch of guys dropped weight back when Lovie was first hired. Izzy added 20 lbs one off-season to switch to defensive tackle. Then dropped it the next. I'll bet Shea's shedding weight right now. As for web sites changing weights, I don't think they do. I don't think the team sites even change them. I can't remember anything worth mentioning, but there was a few times when I'd see a guy and I knew there was no way in hell they had his accurate weight listed. It really doesn't benefit a team to put that information out there.
