Speed WR

ASHKUM BEAR

Recommended Posts

I see a lot of posts about a need for a speed WR to take the top off of the defense. I doubt the Bears go that route since the traditional west coast offense doesn't use a slot WR. That is why Earl Bennett was let go, he didn't line up in the slot once last year. Almost every play last season was with 2 WR's, MBennett and Britton.

If we add another receiving threat, that will be in the form of a TE or FB imo. Just pointing out again to the guys that don't think we will look at a TE that we may just be holding our cards tight for Ebron if Donald/Dix are gone.

I think in a Trestman offense he will add any weapon to the arsenal and make it work. You can throw quick passes to a fast guy as well as a tall guy.

I think Wilson will see a lot more playing time, and maybe even a 3 WR set, but the base offense envolves deception with motion. I don't see the Bears getting away from that too often. The best player for this offense would be an H back that can line up at FB, shift to TE, or split out wide.

I know we need D, but I have a feeling out of 7 picks we draft a TE, RB, QB, and swing OT. On D, I'm hoping for Donald DT, FS, and CB to groom.

I of course agree. When Trestman came in here I read a lot of articles on the west coast offense, and make no mistake Trestman is running a WCO, and in nearly every article they noted that speed isn't an element needed.

The main component is precision route running, and from a quick google search I've seen multiple articles call Desean Jacksons route running poor and lazy. One article called him a one trick pony, and that trick is the go route. Again if the Bears want someone like Jackson they might as well save a ton of $$ and grab DHB or Jacoby Jones.

It's not that speed isn't needed, it's they want to have a base offense that can shift into multiple formations. 2-WRs, 5-Olinemen, QB, RB, TE, and the key is the guy that can line up at FB/TE. I will have to read up on these type of players in the draft. I am not sure if Ebron, Amaro, or Jenkins have that ability.

Ebron and Amaro are basically WRs in a TEs body, so I've backed away from those guys... Jenkins, Niklas, and Fiedorowicz are your more well rounded guys.

If they wanna take a chance on a guy with a dusty background, I'd love Colt Lyerla in the 5th/6th. He's a willing blocker, former linebacker who brings that defensive nastiness to his blocking, good speed for a TE, and he was a former RB who actually got a few handoffs for Oregon. I think he'd be great in that Aaron Hernandez role....Hopefully not in that Aaron Hernandez off the field role.

I'd be asking for trouble if I didn't add that I only take one of the first few guys if they were already able to address at least DT. Trading down and grabbing more picks would certainly be ideal if they can't snag Donald. That would make grabbing one of them a lot easier.

Jacoby Jones is not a FA.

Whoops, you're right, site I was looking at must be a little out dated, he resigned 2 weeks ago.

The point remains though. I kinda doubt Trestman wants a poor, lazy route runner at what he's gonna want $$ wise. If he wants a guy to run a go route he would have played Hester last year.
